Slim Down Saturday

by Jamie

Welcome to my first Slim Down Saturday post. If you are new to this blog, beware. This is not a health food site, nor a “let’s all be on a diet” site. This blog is all about GOOD FOOD. In many shapes and forms. There are a variety of recipes in my archives, ranging from “delicious and healthy”, to “delicious and proceed with caution your hips may expand on site if you take more than 15 bites”. All of my recipes do have one thing in common….they taste GREAT. That said…..
I have decided to do a weekly post where I will share with you some of my best dieting treasures. Treasures, I say. These are some of the simple to make foods that I keep on hand when I am trying to loose a few (or a lot) of pounds. It has been my experience that the more hungry I feel , the worse my weight loss goes. Seriously. When I starve myself, I don’t get very good results. However, if I eat a VERY HEALTHY  300-400 calories every 3-4 hours, my metabolism seems to jump up, dust its self off and spring into action. That’s when I see the most weight loss. I try to eat a good dose of protein, with some kind of whole grain carbohydrate. I usually try and stay between 1400-1700 calories each day. However, if I get up to 2000 by eating a lot of vegetables and fruit, I can still loose weight. I have also noticed that I have the most success when I eliminate sugar and soda. Yes, I’m talking about my gal  Diet Coke. I would never want to paint the old girl in a poor light…but she does make it harder for me to loose weight. Go figure. I know the  nutrition label says 0 calories. But there is something going on in that can that my body doesn’t like. So, I tell her goodbye for a spell.
Now, I am by no means an expert in nutrition. My college degree is in music….with no relation to food whatsoever. However, I have spent a lot of time studying  the best way to loose weight. Anything I post on this blog is from my own experience, and what I have learned works for me.
Good luck to us all and may the clothes in our closets begin to loosen. Funny how the holidays seem to make my pants shrink.

Edamame
This stuff is really great to snack on. They are around 90 calories a serfing. If you have never tried these, beware of the shells. You only eat the soy beans that are inside. I buy them at Costco, where they come frozen in a box with 12 individual bags in it. Every person in my family likes these, but especially by little twin boys who are three. They are really great to snack on, or with a sandwich.
Sausage and Egg Sandwich
This is my one of my best breakfast choices. I toast one piece of my homemade Whole Wheat Bread, fry up an egg (with only cooking spray in the pan) and heat up a Morning Star Sausage Patty. The sausage is made out of soy and they are really great. I buy them in a box at Costco for about $10. They are a bit pricey, but the protein in them really goes a long way to filling you up, and they really do taste great. I know some of you are rolling your eyes and thinking “yeah, right”, this chic is up in the night. If you try them, you will see that I was right. Even my 12 year old son begs me to let him have one. (I don’t give in very often. What kind of mother does that make me?)

Spinach wrap with yogurt dip
When I arrived home from a fun wintry vacation with my family a few weeks ago, I had received a big box of food from a company called Simply Delicious Cedar’s. (This company is not paying me to try these products and say they are great. They came as a gift from the company, and I am free to say what ever I choose about them.) I have loved trying these products! This vegetable yogurt dip is very tasty, and much more flavorful than light mayo. It only has 15 calories for 1 Tablespoon. The pretty green wrap you see in the picture is also from this company. They wrap itself has 180 calories, and after I fill it with turkey and ham deli meat, the yogurt dip and some great veggies, it has about 350 calories. Sometimes I just eat half of it for lunch with a piece of fruit, and eat the other half as a snack later in the afternoon.
That’s it for today! I look forward to working on another Slim Down Saturday post for next week. I am also planning a fun ****cookbook giveaway****, a wonderful dinner recipe and will be posting a great Carrot Cake recipe I have been making for years. It’s a good one! See you soon!

Thanks for stopping by. I'll add some quick, healthy meals to my site if you want to come back some time. I'm currently pregnant, but about three years ago I lost 50 pounds eating healthy and clean. You're right about the small meals. They really help! The hungrier you are, the higher chance you have of gorging on whatever is around. Good for you for realizing that healthy food can be yummy as well!
Cheers!

THis is a really good post. It's full of helpful ideas. I'm always on the lookout for healthy AND tasty food. I might have to try the sausages. I bought something similar once and it was disgusting. I've been a bit soy-shy since. 🙂

I will definitely look for the simply cedar's products because your wrap looks delish. I love those morning star sausage patties, especially the maple flavored. Thanks again for stopping by my blog.

Do you have any recipes for edamame? I’ve eaten them plain but wish I knew how the local Japanese restaurant serves them. So good!
