So here is the thing.

Groceries are getting expensive.
Milk, butter, eggs, meat, produce….it seems that the prices go up every time I go to the store. Don’t they know I’ve got a barrel full of people to feed? Sheesh. Get serious. I’m a girl on a budget for heavens sake.
So here’s the thing.
A girl on a budget (with a food blog and 7 people to feed) has to be careful how she spends her grocery pennies. I need to find great  deals every time I hit the store. I try and only purchase items that are on sale, then I buy a whole slew of them. Good for my budget, and for my food storage. To make the most of this kind of shopping you need to have a little bit of knowledge. You’ve got to know what a good deal is! To buy, or not to buy. That is the question.

Should a person purchase 50 pounds of chicken if it’s $2.00 per pound?
Just say….”Of course not! That is not a good deal.”

Does one purchase 50 boxes of Captain Crunch if it’s $1.00 per box. “Why yes!” would be the appropriate answer here.

To buy, or not to buy. How is a gal to know?

And now for a really cool thing…
There is a wonderful website called Deals to Meals that is set up specifically to help people navigate the grocery store world. Grocery store deals are posted there each week. You have the option of  viewing any of the stores around your area. A rating system is used to help you know if the deal is great (something you should stock up on) or if the deal is average. (Better to leave it until next time).

The best news!
You don’t have to go to 5 different stores and clip 5,000 coupons to get good deals on all of the items you need. Extra time doesn’t grow on trees you know. (If you see some growing somewhere, let me know. Will ya?) Shopping at 5 different grocery stores each week can give a girl a real headache.

Now for the best old news.

Walmart will price match. This is not a joke. I do it all of the time!
This past week I checked in with Deals to Meals...saw that a grocery store called Rancho Market had Limes for 33 cents a pound. They had a lot of other really great deals as well. I made out my weekly grocery store list, writing all of the prices I wanted to match on the list.

Then I hustled myself down to my local Walmart to do my weekly shopping. When I got to the check out stand I politely said to the checker….

“I have some price matching to do on my produce.”
“Ok, no problem. How much for the limes?” was her reply.

I’m not kidding. That’s how it works. At least at the Walmart I frequent. They are really great about ad matching. I usually take the grocery store ads with me, just in case they want to check the price I am quoting. They hardly EVER ask to see them.

I ended up purchasing 8 limes for 48 cents. It did feel a little bit like highway robbery. But it wasn’t. It was all legit. And that’s the truth of it.

  1. You can do the same thing at GrocerySmarts.com for free. They even add the coupons to the list in case you want to go that route. Also, a tip on price matching. Take some sticky notes along with you. As you shop put the price match price along with the first letter of the store you are price matching on the sticky note and stick that on top of the item. Then when you get to the register all you have to tell them is those are price match items.

  2. I don't live in one of those cool states, so I can't enter…but what an awesome site! I'm also more than slightly jealous that you have a friendly, helpful Wal-mart! I seriously got loudly mocked by a cashier for not being on food-stamps since I had three kids. It was crazy! Target has my heart with it's stacking coupon deals!
