Speed Scrabble GIVEAWAY!

by Jamie

So, you know and I know that this is a food blog, right?

Which means I post recipes for you all and then I cross my fingers and hope that you love the food and that your family and friends call you super cook of the universe.

That is my goal, plain and simple.

But today is Saturday and you might have some family and friends near by that want to hang out together and have a bit of fun. So that’s what I have for you. A recipe for fun!

My family and I have been playing Speed Scrabble a lot since the holidays, and it is really a ton of fun (and a little bit addicting 🙂 It’s kind of like playing Words With Friends, except you play with real friends who are living and breathing and sitting next to you. You don’t have to know a lot of big fancy words, simple three letter words work well. Which is lucky for me, my simple mind and my hideous spelling skills. The game is great for a small number of players or for a large group. Kids can participate and so can great grandmothers. All you need are a couple of boxes of Scrabble, a handful of players and a table. Pretty simple, right?

Because I love ya, and I love to pass on a fun thing or two to you wonderful readers…I picked up a couple of Scrabble Board Games for one of you!

To enter the giveaway leave me a comment telling me one of your favorite games. You know…like Monopoly, or Canasta  Spin the Bottle or Leap Frog. You have until Thursday at midnight to enter. The winner will be announced on Friday morning bright and early with the sunshine.

Now….let me show you how to play!

HOW TO PLAY SPEED SCRABBLE
You will need…
2-12 players (ages 8-88)
2 Scrabble Board Games

Pour out all of the wooden tiles into the middle of  large table and lay them face down.

Each player chooses out 10 tiles, keeping them face down.

When all players are ready, someone says “GO!”. Everyone turns over their tiles

and begins to build the letters into words, connecting the words to each other. Words can be spelled across and down. No proper nouns, contractions or abbreviations, please.

When one player has used up all of his or her tiles they shout “Draw”! All players choose two more tiles from the center of the table

and work to use them in their word puzzle.

When the tiles from the middle of the table have all been drawn, the first player to use all of their tiles shouts “Done” and then all word building stops. Points are scored by adding up the numbers on the tiles both across and down, making letters that have been used twice worth double the points. (Note that the X above is equal to 8 points. It will count for 8 points going across and 8 points going down.) Players who have tiles that aren’t used in their puzzle have to subtract those points from their score.

Tiles that are blank count as what ever letter you have used them for. The blank tile above was used as a Z, which is worth ten points. Since it has been used twice it counts for twenty in this puzzle.

The player with the highest score wins.

That’s it! Hope you enjoy it (and I hope the instructions make sense)! Thanks so much for dropping by today. See you Monday morning with a brand new recipe.

The edible kind. 🙂

We got a new one for Christmas called You've Been Sentenced….so much fun, hilarious, and my kids had a BLAST! especially because they trounced their dad (for whom English is a second language). You have 10 pentagon shaped cards and each card has a word (or phrase) and variations on each of the 5 sides (choice, chose, choose, choosing, made the choice). You have to use as many of the 10 cards as you can to make a grammatically correct sentence…which results in lots of ridiculously silly fun.
Thanks for the chance to WIN! I love playing games with my fam!

We did a light green penny round, and found them on Overstock.com for about 1/4 of the price. With a lot of stuff I try to buy local, but if you’re going with Home Depot anyway, I’d rnmmcoeed going on Overstock. Plus, with us, it was the difference between $1,200 and $300. There was no noticeable quality difference. You can sort of see it in this

Our family loves playing Settlers of Catan. My son just gave the family the Knights and Barbarians expansion for Christmas. Even with older kids we still manage to have a game night at least once a week.

My favorite is Funglish. It is indeed a fun game which we play pretty often with our friends since our kiddo (the only one so far) is only 2 years old he can't joint us yet.

The family favrite around here is Uno. Just because it is easy to teach the kids the difference between colors and numbers. But, my parents just gave us a new one that we can't wait to try out-Mille Bournes. And when I want an old-fashioned board game, Clue is my favorite go to.

I can't wait to try some of the games your readers suggest – they sound like fun! My daughter and I are hooked on “Trouble” – we have been playing every day. There's nothing like a popomatic dice roller! 🙂

When the kids were younger and still at home, we used to play a lot of “The Game of Life”. Now it seems like we play more card games like Phase 10 and Michigan Rummy with our adult friends. Wanda
