Several weeks ago my two daughters and I were having a “girls night” of sorts. All of the boys in our family were away at a Fathers and Sons camp out, and so we girls did fun things like eat chocolate and watch movies while we lay in my bed.
After our movie watching had ended and it was 12:30 AM, I turned off the TV, said goodnight to my girls, turned on my lamp and pulled out whatever book I happened to be reading at the time.
“Mom.” they said.
“What in the wide world are you doing?”
“This is my reading time, ladies. I can’t go to bed with out reading something great for a little while.”
“Ooooooo, yuckkkkkkk, that is the most boring thing we have ever heard of! Whoooooooo would want to read at 12:30 in the morning.”
“I would. Go to sleep.”
I am keeping my fingers crossed they won’t always feel this way about reading. For me reading late at night is one of the best times of the day. A little pleasure I indulge myself in for 15 or 20 minutes every night. A good book and no one to bug me while I read it. 🙂
Today for all of you book lovers out there I have compiled a list of 10 of my favorites, with a short review of each one. (Try not to count how many times I say words like captivating and inspirational, okay? I usually write about butter, sugar and chicken, my vocabulary is limited.)
I’m also giving away a $50 Amazon Gift Card to one of you lucky ladies and gentlemen, because everyone needs a few good books to read this summer, am I right?
PS…you don’t have to spend it on books.
To enter the giveaway just leave me a comment telling me a book or two that you have read and found to be captivating and inspirational. Please remember to leave your email address with your comment, thank you very much. Winner will be announced on Wednesday morning, June 27th.
And now, for you…my list (in no particular order) of 10 Fabulous Summer Reads.

LOVED the book “Okay for Now”! Followed your recommendation and could not put it down. Then it made the rounds of all my family members. Checked the library and they had several more by this author–you MUST read “First Boy” and “Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy”. IMO these are even better than “Okay for Now”. Thanks for the inspiration and happy reading!
BTW, love your recipes too!

So glad you loved it Barb. Thanks for letting me know. It’s one that has been passed around my whole family too! Have a good one!

After reading your book recommendations, which I have read several of these, you need to read The Herectics Daughter. So so so good. Great Fall read too.
That’s a morrabde-kel. Great thinking!
I just discovered your blog and this was my first stop — I have read and loved every book on this list except The House of Riverton (so naturally, I am on my way to get it right now!) Looking forward to checking out some recipes now too….
Jill,
Welcome to you! Hope you love the book. 🙂

[…] by Jamie on January 18, 2013 Hey there ladies and gentlemen. No recipe for you all today. Rather, I have prepared a list of 10 Wonderful Winter Reads. Just in case you are barricaded up under a blanket of snow, twiddling your thumbs and waiting for the world to thaw. (I know that couldn’t possibly be true and that you are most likely running around with all manner of busy-ness taking hold of your lives.) However, if you are like me, spending some time curled up with a good book is one of lifes simple pleasures. And so if you are looking for something to read, here is a list of some of my favorites. I tried to include a wide variety of genres including Classics, Historical Fiction, Young Adult Post Apocalyptic, a couple of Lovely Romances and one book that will have you crying with laughter. I am planning to post a book list for you all twice a year, once in the summer and once in the winter. To see the list I posted this past summer, click here. […]
I’m a little late seeing this post, but anytime someone posts book suggestions I’m on it like white on rice! I have read a few of the books above, but have to totally agree with you on A Thousand Splendid Suns – it’s remarkable, but there were parts I cringed while reading because it was so heartbreaking and I cried! But for anyone who is put off by the description – it really is worth it to read it if you haven’t! Eye opening!
[…] out there are book nerds, just like me. We reading nerds have to stick together, right! Click here for the list from last Summer, and here for the list from last Winter. Check out the comment […]
