The Weekend Report: Falling Out of Order

by Jamie

We have been enjoying a GORGEOUS spring here in Utah, right on the heels of a very mild winter. Which has made me ever so happy. Just look at those vibrant colors!

tree

This beautiful tree sits right outside my bedroom window, and baby…I have been drinking in that color like it was sweet dream pie. She only shows that particular shade of hot pink for a couple of weeks every spring and it’s a real treat. This picture I snapped with my phone, just doesn’t do it justice.

my boys

My boys (my favorite boys in all the wide world, by the way) worked hard earlier in the week mulching my flower beds. Ah, to be outside in the glorious sun! As I said, it has been unseasonably nice.

Here in Utah, at least.

And just when I was getting ready to purchase a few tomato plants to get my vegetable garden going…

school pick up

This! On Wednesday it snowed all the day long, buckets of snow guys. Buckets! Just look at those cute elementary school kids making their way from from school.  I hadn’t even sent my little boys to school with coats on.

I think someone has gotten the seasons mixed up.

so soad

This is what happens to spring flowers when they are met with winter storms.

It’s the sad sorry truth. They freeze right over, poor things.

This is the way of it, here in Utah. Things have fallen out of order.

I get like that sometimes. All out of order. I get my head buried in the everyday business of life and it consumes me. I often find myself letting work,  social media, my overflowing inbox, piles of laundry, posts to write, recipes to cook, groceries to buy, obligations to fulfill…take over and when my kids come through the door at the end of the day I forget…

to look them in the eye.

To listen and focus on what they are saying to me.

To really hear what they want to communicate.

To hang all my other hats on the shelf for a time and just be the mom. A caring mother, who is tuned into them and their needs. An engaged mama, not a part time, half listening, lady in the kitchen cooking dinner. 🙂

This crazy weather has given me reason to ponder the order of things this week. I can’t do a darned thing about the weather and it’s wild order. But I am super glad for the chance to refocus again, to put my priorities back in order and be a Mother first and foremost.

Try, try again…as the saying goes.

Loved this quote from the LDS General Women’s Conference I heard a couple of weeks ago.

“…there is no greater honor, no more elevated title, and no more important role in this life than that of mother or father…”
~Bonnie Oscarson

Such a good reminder.

Have a great weekend, all!

PS…all that snow I showed you above? It seriously melted in about 24 hours time. 8 whole inches, just gone in one day. Crazy!

Seems such a shame to see the flower fall over, nature normally gets it right.
Love the look of the Cream Cheese Stuffed Strawberries.
Keep those recipes coming.

I feel ignorant for not knowing this, Jamie, but what kind of tree is that? So beautiful!

Hi Amy,
Don’t feel ignorant at all! I am not even sure myself. I bought it years ago on clearance for $10 late in the fall. I think it may be some kind of crab apple tree.
Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful!
Best of luck!

I’m not one to post comments, I don’t have any social media accounts but I wanted you to know how much this post meant to me! Lately as I struggle to find balance and prioritize being a wife, a mom, working a full time job, and everything else life requires, I love to hear that other moms feel the same way I do. Your words were exactly what I needed today!!
Not to mention, EVERY one of your recipes that I’ve tried are to die for!!!
Thank you for taking the time to make this blog, it makes my life easier having an organized place to come browse recipes and plan meals for my family.

All the best to you and your family,
~Jamie

Jamie, I haven’t met you, but I really like you!
Similar weather chaos up here in Eastern Idaho, but I think we are more used to it than you guys. I can’t remember a Spring when my daffodils didn’t get snowed on. We did get a nice sized snowman out of that storm! Thank you for the reminder to focus on my family.

just like weather in Georgia! We can have snow today and wear shorts tomorrow.. As the saying goes- “If you don’t like the weather in Georgia- wait a hour- it will be different”..
