Chocolate Glazed Donuts + 17 other must try donut recipes

by Jamie

I am all about donuts this week! You may have the noticed the killer fabulous Apple Fritters I posted on Wednesday (click over at your own risk) and today I am bringing Chocolate Glazed Donuts to the party. What can I say, other than it’s summer and my teenagers are home and why not make donuts in mass form. It also happens to be national donut day, right this very minute and I am not one to let such a treasured holiday go unnoticed. 🙂

For these Chocolate Glazed Donuts I used the Homemade Glazed Donut recipe from my archives, then whipped up a chocolate glaze that is rich, smooth and fabulous. I will note here that I used semi sweet chocolate chips to which my kids commented “these donuts are so good, but they would be perfect beyond belief if you used milk chocolate chips”. I told them I would be sure to let you know. For those of you who aren’t in love with semi sweet chocolate, milk chocolate should be substituted.

Now, let me show you how to make it happen…

1. Make some Homemade Donuts (recipe and tutorial HERE).
2. For the chocolate glaze pour 1 C whipping cream into a large glass measuring cup.

2. Add 1 1/2 C milk or semi sweet chocolate chips.

3. Pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds, and stir. It will look weird. Don’t let it bother you. Smooth chocolatey bliss is in your future. Return it to the microwave for another 30 seconds.

Stir. Stir some more. You should get this smooth chocolate in just the two heating intervals, but you may need to heat it a 3rd time.
4. When the chocolate is smooth add 1 Tb corn syrup, 1/2 tsp vanilla and a dash of salt. Stir well to combine.

5. Take each donut and dip it in the chocolate.

I only dipped mine half way, but if you want the whole thing covered go ahead and submerge it all.

Set the donut right side up on a wire rack. If you want to add any toppings, now would be the time, before the chocolate has a chance to set up.

Sprinkles!

Toasted coconut or chopped nuts would be great.

I got a little bit wild and crazy and made some chocolate glaze with white chocolate chips, dipped a few donuts in it and sprinkle them with toasted coconut. Heavens, it was good. So good.

Ooh! May I ask a couple of questions? I’ve never seen cornstarch in a chocolate ganache/glaze before, is it there as a sort of binder to stop the chocolate dripping off? Also, what is it like when it sets? Does it stiffen like the kind on bakery donuts or is it still saucy? Thanks!

Erin,
Thank you so much for your comment! You caught an error for me. You need corn syrup…not corn starch. The sauce will stiffen just a bit when set.
Best of luck to you!
