60 Minute Sandwich Buns

by Jamie

Homemade Sandwich Rolls have been on my Recipe Bucket list for a good long while now. I’ve tried many versions (including using my Fabulous French Bread Dough to make into buns…the dough was just too thick and heavy for a good sandwich roll, dang it!) Some recipes I’ve tried have been too light and didn’t hold up well to heartier meats like BBQ Pulled Pork and Sloppy Joes. However, friends…the Homemade Sandwich Buns I have to share with you today are perfect. The outside of the roll has a great, slightly crusty/chewy texture while the inside is not too heavy and not too light. They hold up perfectly with a nice hearty chicken salad, lunch meat or the afore mentioned sloppy joe. As an added bonus, they should only take you 60 minutes (or less) to throw together. That is a blessing, yes?

Hope some of you get a chance to try them!

PS…I’ve got a great, killer sandwich recipe that makes wonderful use of these rolls. She’s coming up on Wed. 🙂 Hope to see you then!

3. Into a large glass measuring cup place 1 C milk, 1/2 C water, 1 Tb honey and 4 Tb butter. Heat it in the microwave for 3 minutes. Notice from the picture, that the butter has started to melt. That’s what you want. The liquid should be hot and the butter slightly melted.

4. Pour the liquid into the mixer. Mix for 1 minute.

6. Add 2 1/4 (or 1 scant tablespoon) of yeast. (I used Active Dry Yeast).

7. With the mixer on low, continue to add the remaining 2 1/2 cups of flour. You’ll know you have enough when the dough pulls away from the side of the bowl. Once you have enough allow it to mix on medium speed for 5 minutes.
8. Allow it to rest in the bowl for 5 minutes.

cut and shape

9. Spray a large cookie sheet with cooking spray and place the dough in the center. Cut it into 4 equal parts. Then cut each of these into three equal parts, resulting in 12 fairly even pieces. Give or take a centimeter or two. 🙂 Roll each piece into a round ball.

10. Whisk an egg until nice and frothy and then brush the top and sides of each roll with it.

toppings

11. Sprinkle sesame seed, or poppy seeds onto the tops and sides of the rolls. Or, you can just leave them plain. No worries.

12. Pop them into the warm oven and allow them to rise until doubled in size. (Should only take about 25 minutes or so).
13. Turn the heat to 400 degrees and bake for about 15 minutes or until the rolls are golden brown.

Do you take the rolls out of the 170 degree oven while your oven gets to the 400 degree temperature or leave it in while it increases?

Jennifer,
Thanks for your question. I leave the rolls in the oven while it increases in heat. Hope they work out for you!
Best of luck!
