1. Mix the water, sugar and yeast together in a measuring cup or in the bottom of your mixer. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
2. Add the salt and the flour, one cup at a time, until it is well incorporated. Mix on high for 5 minutes. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
3. Melt the butter and pour half of it into a jelly roll pan (large cookie sheet).
4. Place the dough in the center of the pan. Let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes. Letting the dough rest makes it MUCH easier to shape.
5. Spread the dough out flat onto the pan until it reaches all of the edges. Doing all of the spreading and cutting of these bread sticks, in the pan makes cleaning up your counter so much easier!
6. Pour the other half of the butter onto the dough. Spread it around with your hands. Sprinkle the Johnny’s Garlic Seasoning all over the dough, and then the Parmesan cheese.
7. With a pizza cutter cut the dough into three rows lengthwise, and then into about 12 little height wise rows.
8. Put the pan into a 170 degree oven for about 7-10 minutes. The breadsticks should rise about 1 inch.
9. Turn you oven up to 350 and bake for about 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
11. I use a pair of cooking scissors to cut the edges where the pizza cutter can’t reach.
That’s it! They are wonderful. I have played around with a variety of things that can be put on the top. I will post those recipes in the days to come! Johnny’s Garlic Spread seasoning is one in a million. I buy it at Costco, and keep several in my long term food storage. It’s really great to have on hand. ENJOY!

Hi! Thanks for the recipe. Please feel free to call me an idiot, but I just made these and mistook 1 tablespoon of yeast, sugar for a teaspoon. So yah, they didn’t turn out. Maybe consider a different font? It was really hard to read.
? yeah blame the font for not being able to tell a capital t from a lowercase ?
I was also confused with the T. Every recipe I’ve used refers to teaspoon with tsp. And tablespoon with tbsp. Maybe it’s a western thing.
Capital T. is always a tablespoon. Small t. Is a teaspoon.
I always knew it as capitol T and same t.
Same here, (tsp.=teaspoon)
(tbsb.=tablespoon)
easy to understand.
These were well-received in my house. Thank you for the recipe. I was working with organic yeast, so it took longer than instructed for each rise time. I ended up using about 4 1/2 cups flour total to get it from sticking to the bowl. I had to do the 170 degree rise for 20 minutes, and ended up baking the sticks for 25 minutes after turning the oven to 350 and starting the timer. It took about 2 1/2 hours altogether from start to finish for me. I served them with pasta and alfredo sauce. Everyone was pleased with the dinner. 🙂
These turned out excellent. Very quick and easy to make and taste great. I didn’t have the garlic spread so just mixed a large crushed clove of fresh garlic in with the 2nd half of the butter
One thing I was unsure of is after being in the oven at 170 for 10 minutes do I take them out of the oven while oven warms to 350? I did not and they took about 10 minutes longer to cook
I love these! I’ve madetem at least ocean week since I found the recipe. Thanks!
[…] A single batch of this dough can be made in a stand mixer. For a double or triple batch of it, make it in a mixer such as a Bosch. Recipe by Jamie @ Jamie Cooks It Up […]
These are fast and fabulous. Instead of raising them in the oven I put the butter on the baking sheet and put it in to melt in a preheated oven 350.Then took it out and proceeded as directed. I let it raisefor about 10 minutes then baked it. Great idea of putting the dough right o to the pan and scoring it. I had company unexpectedly and had the breadsticks done start to finish in 40 min. Thank you!
[…] It is fantastic served with these wonderful Quick and Easy Breadsticks… […]
These are by far THE best breadsticks I have ever had. I didn’t have the specific garlic spread by used Italian seasoning and garlic salt. I also used mozzarella instead of Parmesan since it’s what I had on hand. SO soft, airy and BUTTERY! Amazing.
Reyka,
So happy to hear you are enjoying this recipe!
Best,
~Jamie
These are amazing!!! I found the recipe a few years ago and they are my go to breadsticks. Everyone loves them and I always get requests for the recipe.
Thank you!
So happy to hear it!
When using Kitchenaid mixer for this recipe, do you use the dough hook?
Chris,
Yes, the dough hook is best,
Good luck!
~Jamie
These are WONDERFUL!! I followed the recipe except for the Johnny’s Garlic Topping, but I found a recipe for some and it was simple to make and yummy too! It was from ourbestbites.com by Kate Jones:
1/2 c. powdered Parmesan cheese
2 tsp. Kosher salt
2 Tbsp. garlic powder
2 tsp. oregano
2 tsp. basil
2 tsp. marjoram
2 tsp. parsley
Mix together, store in a shaker top closeable jar in the refrigerator!
This was amazing; I am 14 and while I had to do half with fake butter because my siblings can’t have it, they loved it.
I just made this in 20 mins (from measuring flour to serving.)
I kneeded for about 3 minutes with my Kitchen Aid mixer. Formed a ball and placed into a greased plastic bowl and proofed in the microwave. (3-1/2 minutes total) -30 seconds at a time, power level 2 (note, not all microwaves will do this.) Then straight into the sheet pan. Butter and garlic and into a HOT oven for 12 minutes. Done!
I was gonna make it, then you called margerine crap and now I am on the fence….
You’re right. She probably made a mistake. It’s SH*T! It’s chemicals! Just stop!
This is such an easy recipe to make. Also this is a great way to introduce kids to bread making.

What yeast did you use? Did it come in a small packet or was it from a larger source?
Have you ever frozen these? I made the whole recipe and there are just two of us! If you have, how do you reheat? Thank in advance!

How can you not absolutely love a recipe that specifies ‘not that margarine crap’? Thank you for helping my whole family get through the covid 19 pandemic.
Omg!! This was AWESOME!
I ran out of time to make a pull apart bread and came across this recipe. I was doubtful it would be cooked in time and even turn out well but it did both and was SO tasty! I used a clove of garlic, parsley and adobo seasoning – no parm since we ran out. Excellent!

Thanks for an awesome recipe. Quick and easy. I love it drenched in that garlic and butter.
Dipping in a chillie sauce
What kind of flour do I use?self rising, plain,or bread flower?
All purpose flour
Have had bread sticks now almost 30 minutes and not done but bottoms are browned
House smells good though.
Really really like this recipe!! So easy!! First time I made it, my oldest son used the leftover dough to make ham and cheese hot pockets!! Very yummy!!
YumYumYum! Soft, moist and wonderful. Next time, for my Italian husband I will split into two pans. One just according to recipe for me, and another pan thinner and crispier for my man.
I have been making these for a few years and everyone I have ever served them to has absolutely loved them! I’ve never seen Johnny’s Garlic Seasoning in my neck of the woods so I just use garlic salt and they are perfectly delicious with that. I have also done it with the Papa John’s garlic dipping sauce and parm and it’s great that way too. Maybe one day I will find some Johnny’s and have these in all their glory.
Hi Jamie! I just started learning how to make bread and you break your recipes down so thoroughly for a beginners mind to understand, thank you! I’ve made your fluffy dinner rolls, they are so fluffy, taste amazing and dangerous! I eat way to many when I make them!
These breadsticks were super easy to make and tasted amazing also.
Question: How come you have to double the recipe with the Bosch? My brain can’t wrap around why the kitchen aid makes more with less ingredients.
What is C please?
Cup, 1 cup = 250 ml.
I just started cooking/baking from scratch… what kind of yeast? Active or instant?
I used the instant pkts
Can I use flat pie crust dough to make cheesy bread sticks
Hi Jamie do you think these would work with chopped pepperoni mixed in?
Can these be frozen before baking?
Absolutely wonderful recipe ! Thank You

These look delicious! I don’t have a Costco anywhere near me, and the local stores don’t carry that Johnny’s Seasoning, but I found it on Amazon! I’m planning to make these breadsticks tonight. I have a Bosch mixer. Can you tell me why I would need to double the recipe when using a Bosch? I’m hesitant to double a recipe I’ve never tried. And if I do, can the extra dough be frozen?
Absolutely perfect! Don’t make any changes. Use the recipe exactly as is! Thank you so much 🙂
Can you freeze these I’m one person if cook them first are can you freeze the dough
Very delicious, great recipe!!! Thank you!!!
Its AMAZING i have tried various recipes and this is by far the best will he useing this from now on!
these were. y far the easiest, best recipe!!! they turned out wonderful. I also will be making it as a pizza dough soon as well.
I was just curious, can I not cut them and instead just roll them into Small balls then plop it into a bread maker and cook it that was so it comes out like a big loaf that can be pulled apart?
I made this into a really small batch for just my husband and myself they were really good. Thank you for posting the recipe I made them as is.
I was a total skeptic that these 1) would only take 40 minutes from start to finish and 2) were as good as they looked in the photos. WOWOWOW was I proven wrong! Amazing fluffy delicious pillows of buttery crunch bottom bread! Thank you for sharing your genius!!!!
Jenny,
So happy to hear this recipe worked out for you. Thanks for letting me know..
All my best,
~Jamie
Ya’lll this is so good!! I followed your recipe to a T except adding Italian seasoning with rosemary and Monterey Jack cheese because I was out of Parmesan or mozzarella!! We were like this would make some good pizza as well!! It really reminded me of a focaccia! I wished you saw my picky daughter’s eyes go all bug eyed when she had her first bite!! We reply really enjoyed it! I wished I could share a picture!!
So, I did it!! I turned this into a pizza!! Made it just like you suggested. Except I didn’t precut the dough. But, I added sausage gravy ,scrambled eggs, chopped sausage links and cheese. So so so good!!!! I love the crunchy buttery crust!!
We love these quick, easy and adjustable breadsticks! thank you so much! we have made them several times, we have used oil when out of butter and no cheese and still tastes great, we also just use whatever seasoning we have on hand. Our little ones have even helped make them and had a blast.
Hi Corri,
This makes me so happy to hear, especially that your little ones have enjoyed helping as well. It is one of those great, classic recipes that is hard to ruin. Thanks so much for your comment. It made my day. 🙂
Much love to you and your family,
~Jamie
I shaped the dough on the counter to the size of our baking sheet. Then I cut them into strips crosswise and tied each end of each strip into a knot to mimic rawhide dog chews. Followed the rest of the recipe as written, though it did take them about 17 minutes to bake because of the knots. I decided an hour before our party that I wanted to make bread and this recipe delivered. Thank you so much for sharing it!
Eloen,
So happy to hear it! Thanks for letting me know.
Best,
~Jamie
