Heart Shaped Sugar Cookies with Glaze Iceing

by Jamie
Well friends, it wouldn’t be Valentines Day without Sugar Cookies now would it. I think I have eaten these sugar cookies every Valentines Day and Halloween for my entire life. I posted the recipe for the Sugar Cookies back in October when my blog was just a week or so old. With the recipe is a fabulous Butter Cream Frosting  recipe that is scrum-diddle-e-umptios. These cookies are soft, buttery and wonderful!

This year I wanted to try my hand at glazed icing. I have heard that glazing sugar cookies makes them much easier to decorate and transport. So, I figured I would give it a try. You can go to Our Best Bites or Lovin from the Oven for more detailed instructions on Glazed Icing…which is where I got the idea. The recipe comes from Our Best Bites.

The finished product tasted great!  Different than with butter cream frosting….but still great! It was indeed a lot easier to decorate them more intricately. The only down side was, my kids had a hard time being patient with the glazing method. You have to allow time for the bottom layer of glaze to set, before you pipe your fun decorations on top. It was hard for my girls to wait, and down right impossible for my boys to hold off. I ended up getting a container of leftover butter cream frosting out of the fridge for them to use.
Another fun discovery I made was the great food coloring gel pictured below. I got it at my local WalMart. They even allowed me to use a Robert’s Craft Store coupon for 50% off. You gotta love a deal like that. The red actually turned the frosting RED! Not just a hot pink.

Glazed Icing
3 3/4 C powdered sugar
6 T milk
6 T light corn syrup
1 t vanilla extract
1. Whisk together the sugar and milk until smooth. Then stir in the corn syrup and extract. The mixture should be smooth and thin.
2. Set aside some of the icing for piping. (You will be adding a bit more powdered sugar to this for the piping)
3. With the remaining icing, separate into smaller bowls and add your desired color of food gel. Stir well to incorporate.
4. To glaze the cookies, put a small amount of glaze in the center of the cookie. With the back of the spoon push the glaze gently around to fill up the space.
5. I got a little glaze happy with this cookie. See how it is starting to run right off! Beware….less is more here, folks.
6. While the glaze is setting up mix a bit (about 1/2 C) more powdered sugar into the glaze you set aside. Divide it into smaller bowls and color it with the gel.
7. Put each color into a small Ziploc bag. Snip the end ever so slightly. You don’t want a large cut!
8. Once the bottom coat of glaze has set up a bit, pipe the glaze onto your cookies.
9. Let the cookies rest for a while so that the glaze sets up all the way.

I went to a cookie decorating party last Friday, and the host made some yummy glaze for the cookies. It makes the final product so beautiful! My husband and I, of course, have long since polished off the dozen+ cookies I brought home, so I'm hoping to make some more Valentine's treats. I'll definitely give your recipe a try. Thanks for sharing!
