Recipe from my dear sister in law, Ember Storrs`
This wonderful recipe for LumberJack Baked Beans has been one of our summer staples for nearly a decade. I know many of you have made it for years as well. I’ve updated it with new pictures and a more simplified cooking method today.
Never made this recipe before? I think you are in for a real treat!
Please be aware, that bacon and onions are involved.
As well as a sweet and tangy sauce that is out of this world. Several kinds of beans are included, making it pretty to look at. I hope you get a chance to try them!
Ingredients
- 8 slices bacon, cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 1 3/4 C brown sugar
- 1/3 C plus 2 T apple cider vinegar
- 1 1/2 t dry mustard
- 1 1/2 t ginger
- 1 1/2 t salt
- 1 16 oz can butter beans
- 1 16 oz can pinto beans
- 1 16 oz can red kidney beans
- 1 30 oz can Bush's Homestyle Baked Beans
Instructions
1. Toss the bacon pieces and chopped onion into a large skillet and cook over medium high heat until the onions are wilted.
2. While your onions and bacon cook, grab a large glass measuring cup and stir together the brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, dry mustard, ginger and salt.
3. Pour the sauce over the wilted onions and cooked bacon.
4. Drain and rinse your butter, pinto and kidney beans and add them to the skillet.
5. Open up your can of baked beans. Pour the whole can, sauce and all into the skillet.
8. Give everything a nice stir and allow it to simmer for about 10 minutes, then pour into a 3 quart casserole dish.
9. Cover your dish and bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour. Remove the dish from the oven, give the beans a stir and put the old girl right back in, uncovered this time. Cook for 5-10 more minutes. Or, cook them in your Crock Pot on low for 3-4 hours.

This is very similar to my baked bean recipe, but I add a can of pineapple tidbits. Try it…Heaven.

My family loves these. Every get together we have, I have to make these.
lOVE YOUR RECIPES
HI, I love this recipe…..made it several times but i just realized when doubling the recipe I may be adding too much brown sugar…the recipe states 1 3/4 cup of brown sugar…..do you mean 1 AND 3/4 cups or ONE 3/4 cup of brown sugar? Thanks!
it’s common sense…if it was one 3/4 cup…it would be listed as just 3/4 cup.
SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT PICNIC DISH.YUM

I made your lumber jack baked beans today and loved them. Do you have a printable recipe?
Thanks, Cheri
I make these beans they are so good I have my own recipe that l did several years ago back in the earley 70`s! I sometimes cook up a big pan full of rice Brown or white I spread a good bit in bottom of a long square baking dish then I add the beans after they have cooked
for several hours put the beans over the cooked rice baked in the oven for 30 minutes and sprinkle some Mexican Fine Sgreded Cheese over top the last 10-15 minutes or no cheese. another time l will put the rice with an ice cream scope full on the plate then pour the beans over the rice or just have the beans, buttered noodles on side with homemade yellow cornbread or white cornbread serve with Homemade Ice Tea!!! If you want a good Cornbread Buy Quackers Cornmeal use whole milk l go by the regular cornbread go on line under Quacker Oatmeal !!! Enjoy!!!
This is my alltime favorite baked beans recipe. You won’t believe how good they are. A nice change from the typical baked beans. You could really have a meal with this and a salad. Yummmmmmy!
These are the NEW HIT at our family party! Thanks for posting this! I’ve modified a ‘tad’… with a little ketchup… and even a hint of BBQ sauce, but all in all this is a quality recipe that is THE BOMB! tHANKS!
Beth,
So glad this recipe worked out so well for you. Thanks for letting me know.
All the best,
~Jamie
I have doubled this recipe and made these for years for a large gathering every year and I would be in trouble if I didn’t bring them. I put them into crock pot for a few hours after cooking bacon and onion. The crock pot is empty at the end of the party!!
These beans sounds so good. Thank you.
I followed the recipe exactly and then added a can of pineapple tidbits – almost good enough for dessert!
Can the lumber jack beans be made a day ahead?

Hi Jamie! Jamie here. I must tell you that I started salivating when I saw this on your menu plan for the week. These are my absolute favorite baked beans E V E R!!! Yes. They are that amazing. They’ve accompanied me to many a family BBQ. I love your blog so much and not just because we share the same name and we both live in this beautiful beehive state. I turn to it several times a week for my constant “what’s for dinner?” dilemma. Thanks for all you do!
Is there a way to print this recipe?
Fantastic! Three of us devoured the beans in two days.
Michelle,
So happy to hear it! Thanks for letting me know.
All the best,
~Jamie
