Don’t look now.
But it’s Friday.
Ahh.
That just feels good, don’t you think?
Because, I’m sure you don’t have one earthly
thing to do this weekend and are just planning sit
with your feet up and read a good book, right?
No?
Not a book, hu.
You must be planning to kick back and have a
Star Wars movie marathon with your family?
Wrong again!
Ok so maybe the whole “kick back and relax”
thing isn’t meant for weekends that
live in the middle of December.
Maybe you’ll just rush and run around and wrap
and shop and bake and attend parties and stuff like that.
Sounds like a lot of fun!
Let’s save the good book and movie marathon
until after the 25th ok?

Sounds like a plan.

Christmas Treat week continues
with these fun Homemade Suckers.
They are a fun activity for kids and adults alike.
I will give a warning however…
please be extra cautious of the hot candy.
It can burn like the devil, I tell you.

and why wouldn’t you?

Homemade Suckers
Time: 30 minutes
Yield: 12 large suckers
Recipe from Family Fun

2 C sugar
1 C water
2/3 C corn syrup
1-2 t candy flavoring (extracts don’t work)
food coloring
sucker molds
sucker sticks

These candy flavorings can be found at most craft stores (got mine at Hobby Lobby) and at baking supply stores.

These Americolor Food Coloring Gels work wonderfully, but they are not a necessity. Regular food coloring works, your colors just won’t be quite as vivid and bright.
Hobby Lobby is the place to purchase these beauties.
The sucker molds are easiest found on line. They have a lot of fun shapes and sizes at Amazon. See the links below.

Sucker sticks can be found at Walmart and most craft stores.

Ok, then.
Let’s make them.

1. Pour 1 cup water

2 cups sugar

and 2/3 C corn syrup into a heavy medium sized pot.

2. Cook over medium high heat to 280 degrees, or until it starts to turn golden brown. This should take about 15 minutes.

If the mixture starts to get brownish in the center, remove it from the heat to complete the cooking phase. You don’t want it to burn.

3. Pour in the candy flavoring…

and the food coloring and stir it well to combine.

4. Quickly pour the candy into your sucker molds. You will want to work pretty fast here. The candy will begin to harden.
5. Let the suckers cool until set and then carefully pop them out of the molds.

Enjoy!!

  1. Your recipe says 2 cups sugar & 1 cup water – your instructions say 2 cups water & 1 cup sugar? which is the correct? wouldn't want watery suckers – or hard lumps

  2. Melissa,
Thanks for catching my error. I've fixed it in the recipe. You need 2 C sugar, 1 C water as it is posted in the ingredient list. Good luck! Hope you enjoy them!

  3. Thanks Jamie – I used the sucker recipe to make sugar coral for my sister's wedding cake – worked perfectly! 🙂
