Unbroken {Giveaway}

by Jamie

 THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

No recipe today my friends.

Please don’t panic. I have not fallen out of love with food. I’ll be sharing two new recipes with you before the week is complete. If you can’t wait that long click over to my recipe file where more than 400 recipes are just waiting to become your new best friend.

I am taking a little recipe break, because I have recently read a book that is so amazing and inspirational, I couldn’t help but tell you about it. Just in case you know how to read, and enjoy doing so on a regular basis. 🙂

Unbroken is written by Laura Hillenbrand. It’s the biography of Louie Zampernini, Olympian Athlete and World War II survivor.
It is difficult to read at times, due to the insanely harsh and unbelievable conditions Mr. Zampernini experienced during the war. However, the story is compelling, riveting and immensely moving. It’s the kind of book that makes you grateful just to lay your head down at night on a clean pillow in the safety of your own home. Page after page I found myself in complete awe of Louie Zampernini, his constant will to live, the strength of his character, and his kindness to those suffering around him. It left me wanting to be better, do better, live better.

Read it, my friends. Your time will be well spent.

I would love to order a copy of this book for TWO of you. To enter the giveaway, leave me a comment telling me one of your favorite books, and why you loved it. Also, please leave your email address with your comment. You can enter from now until Sunday night at midnight. The winners will be announced Monday morning bright and early with the sunshine.

Have a good day, everyone! See you back here soon. Calories will be included in the next several posts. 🙂

I have one favorite that I have reread a few times. “Three cups of Tea” It's a moving true story about one mans drive to educate the girls in Pakistan and now Afghanistan. His thinking is if the women are educated then they can make better decisions for their families and country.

The other one I just read over the Christmas break was “Heaven is Real”. It's just amazing!

I love the classics – Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, Little Women – those girly classics, but I also love CS Lewis' books like The Screwtape Letters. What I love is books that make me think and want to be a better person. Love the blog! [email protected]

My favorite eons back, and the book that started me reading a lot, was Evergreen by Belva Plain. It's about a German immigrant and all the life experiences that develop in her new life in America. It could be a “series” because there are 4-5 other books that involve the same family characters. Also loved The Help, Icy Sparks, & Salting Roses.

I love to read but with a 2 year old, job and college I am sad to say I rarely have time. But, oh how I LOVE to read! I have so many favorites it's hard to choose just one. The first that comes to mind is Wuthering Heights – I read it in high school as an English assignment and really didn't like it at the time. I've read it 5 times since then, so I guess I really do love it! My other favorite is the Outlander series and some will cringe at that. But, oh what a book series to just get lost in! I've seen this book in many newsletters and wondered what it was about, thanks for sharing! I'll add it to my ever growing list of books to read in my “off” time. Unless, of course, you pick me to win it! [email protected]

My favorite book is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. The characters in it seem like they are old friends to me and the story is fantastic! It is set up in letter format and that makes it seem real. Such a feel good book.

I actually just started reading Unbroken. Such a moving story already!
Thanks!

One of my favorite books is Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. The setting is the Civil War. Much of the story takes place in the area where I live in IL. I enjoy good historical fiction and the mention of local places makes it even more readable for me. Thanks for the chance to win and the recommendation for this book.

My favorite little-known book series has to be the Mrs. Pollifax books by Dorothy Gilman. She is an older lady, widow, children all grown up and not sure how to fill the remaining years. She decides to become a spy and goes to the CIA to sign up. They are hilarious books and she is the perfect spunky old lady. The first one is called “The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax”.
My sister Emily lives near you and she introduced me to your AMAZING blog. Thank you so much for the wonderful recipes! You have a real talent for this. I made your soft pretzels last night and they were a huge hit. Thank you for making the recipes clear, easy to follow and exciting. I've never had a recipe make me so pumped to cook it!

I love to read and have so very many favorites. I'm not really good at picking only one favorite. A relatively recent favorite is “The Help”. Such an inspiring and riveting book. I loved the whole thing. Another favorite is “Exodus” by Leon Uris. It's an intriguing {fictional} story about Jews trying to get back to their homeland {I can't remember if it's set right at the end of WWII or just post-}. There's some tough stuff to read in that story and I wouldn't recommend it for everyone {the author doesn't spare a few graphics} but I loved it and have read it twice. I'm sure I'll read it again. I've heard great things about this book as well! Thanks for this opportunity! jessica.harwood.21{at}gmail{dot}com

So many books, so little time. As the holder of an English degree with an emph in Creative Writing, asking me which book is my favorite is like asking a beachcomber which is his favorite grain of sand. All the books I've read, good and bad, are an integral part of my literary experience. I recently finished “Tuesdays at the Castle” by Jessica Day George and “Crossed” by Ally Condie (sequel to Matched). I would recommend “Tuesdays” for middle readers (late elementary/middle school) and the “Matched” series for the teen scene readers. I enjoyed them both very much. I just started “The Help” by Kathryn Stockett. Some other favorites include: “Book of a Thousand Days” (Shannon Hale), “The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency” (Alexander Mccall Smith), “The Last Camel Died at Noon” (Elizabeth Peters), and “Ivanhoe” (Sir Walter Scott). This is a hard one. I LOVE to read, and it seems that my most recent read is usually my favorite, however, I think if I really had to CHOOSE one… It would have to be “Left to Tell” by Immaculee Ilibagiza. I loved this book, although it was at times very difficult to stomach, I was amazed at how she turned to God and the miracles that happened during that time in her life. It was so inspiring and amazing and left me in awe. I read it at least a year ago, but I find myself still thinking about it. To me there is nothing better than reading a book of someone's struggles and successes to overcome something seemingly insurmountable. It gives me hope everyday, it inspires me to not be such a cry baby and it helps me remember God's mercy for us. Thanks for keeping up this awesome blog, your recipes are amazing!! -Cherri 🙂 [email protected]

Hello!
First, I must say that I just stumbled upon some of your recipes from Pinterest, and was browsing around your site: I want to make all of your inspiring recipes! They look fabulous! Thanks or sharing 🙂

The last book I read was, The Help. I actually listened to it, and it had different readers for the different characters. It was really great. I then saw the movie, but of course, the book is always better. I plan to see if I can get the book that you are referring to. Thanks for the recommendation!

One of my favorites is Same Kind of Different as Me. It is an amazing and true story of how one woman in Texas made the difference in the lives of so many others around her. She stepped out of her comfort zone, and pushed her husband out of his, to enhance the lives of those around them. It is a great story that demonstrates how people can turn difficult times into rewarding experiences. [email protected]

My favorite is As I Have Loved You by Kitty DeRuyter. She writes her TRUE STORY so clearly you can feel the humidity and smell the foliage… It is about a girl who is born in Indonesia and during her childhood WWII breaks out and her wealthy families home is seized and her father escapes the Japanese and becomes a freedom fighter. This causes the Japanese to hold the family hostage, eventually sending them into internment camps… the story is AMAZING and life changing! [email protected]

I recently read The Help and enjoyed it a lot. My favorite book tends to be whatever I'm reading at the moment. I love books about WWII, mainly because my mom and her family lived in Belgium during that difficult time. This book sounds amazing, I would love a chance to win a copy and am always looking forward to a great read. [email protected]

My favorite book as of yet is Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert. Don't judge it by the movie, they never do it justice. I'm also reading The Happiness Project, it was a #1 on New York Best Seller List. So Good, so far. Thanks Jamie for the recommendation. [email protected]

Reading is one of my passions in life, so much that I will forgo everything else so that I can read just one more chapter until the book is finished. The books that I have read most recently are: “The Help”, “Sarah's Key”, and “The Hunger Game” series. One of my favorites was from my childhood “Baby Island”, my friends and I would play out the story during recess. Several Christmas's ago my daughters surprised me with a copy of the book, sweet childhood memories.

Just a comment from what I read from a few others: These Is My Words was a fabulous read. There are two sequels to it that most people are not aware of that are equally as good: Sarah's Quilt, and The Star Garden.
