How to make Witches Brew

by Jamie

Witches Brew just might be the easiest spooky treat you will ever make in your life. It only takes two ingredients, and is the cause for much ”oooo-ing” and “ahhhhh-ing” from each and every goblin who sees it. Smokey puffs of goodness flowing out of a big black pot can do that to a person, am I right!

And it’s edible, which is a bonus, since most people coming to a Halloween party are likely to get thirsty. No one likes to be left lonely and parched after gobbling up a snickers bar or two.

Let me show you how to make it happen.

Time: 2 minutes
Yield: about
Recipe from MyDearMother

2 pounds dry ice
4 (2 liter) bottles of cold Root Beer

1. Find yourself some dry ice. You should plan to purchase within two hours of using it, as it won’t last in your freezer much longer than that.  It can be purchased at most large grocery stores. I just asked the checker for some, and one of the baggers went and grabbed it for me. It also helps if you ask for it to be wrapped in a paper sack, to keep it as cold as possible while you travel home. Keep in the freezer until you are ready to use it.

Be careful not to touch it with your bare fingers, hands, arms or toes. It will give you an unwelcome burn.

Drop the dried ice into a large pot, I opted to use my big canning pot.

Pour the cold root beer over the ice. It will immediately start to bubble up

and frothy puffs of Halloween wonder will come wafting out of your pot.

If you have a hard time getting the smokey froth to come up from the bottom of the pot, try blowing on it a bit and then breaking up the dried ice with a knife. It should bubble and froth for you for about 10 minutes.

Enjoy!

Does it work similarly with other types of soda? I’m not a fan of root beer.

So Cute!! Just a warning, learned the hard way many years ago when we put on a Halloween fair at school, do NOT get any in your mouth! A friend did that trying to breath out the ‘smoke’ and it touched his tongue and it took off his taste buds.. they didn’t grown back. Yup, most people know this, but there are always the one or two that don’t. Yes, Jennifer, it works with any liquid.

Koolaid works too- the dry ice makes everything fizzy. Sometimes I set a smaller pot inside the big one and once its smoking I stir in some fun.. adding spiders, eye balls, bat wings, frog legs.. or whatever rubbery things. I am careful to stir on the outside of the small pot. Lots of oohs and ahhs!

Just so’s ya know…the chemical bond that turns carbon dioxide into dry ice is broken by putting it in the freezer (or any electrical appliance). It should be stored in a cooler wrapped in a paper bag and then a towel or something. You will only lose about a pound a day if you store it this way…Of dry ice, that is; sorry to disappoint you.

He is not saying that you smoke marijuana or that all black people smoke marijuana he is saying those guys smoke. Whites and blacks smoke just as much marijuana. if he made a joke on white people smoking marijuana wouldn’t it mean the same i think it would unless you think there is a diference

I’m planning my kids’ UNbirthday Party, and I was wondering if this might work in a smaller scale? I was thinking it would be cute in a tea pot. I had NO idea that this effect was so easy, so thanks a billion for the post!

Nicole,
I haven’t ever tried it on a smaller scale, but I imagine it would work. Let me know if you try it and how it goes.
All the best,
~Jamie
