by Jamie

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

I have an unusual, happy, game lovers post for you today! Consider it a recipe for fun that involves Zero Dirty Dishes. I love the sound of that, don’t you. 🙂 I’m sharing with all of you on this cold December day, a list of 12 wonderful board or card games that would be worth buying this Christmas. These are all games that I have played with friends and/or family and have enjoyed a lot. You’ll notice I have included the recommended age, number of players and average cost for each game as well. I am trying to keep you in the know, here.

As an added bonus (and because I love ya, and so appreciate you coming here to read my blog) I would love to give one lucky reader THREE OF THE GAMES FEATURED BELOW.  The winner will be able to personally select the three games they would enjoy the most from the list below (within this post, not the comment section). To enter the giveaway just leave me a comment below telling me what your favorite family game is, and why you love it. It can be any of the games I have listed here if you would like, or something totally different. Can’t wait to hear your recommendations. I said it was going to be a fun post, didn’t I? You can enter the giveaway until Tuesday December 10th at midnight. The winner will be announced Wednesday December 11th and contacted by email.

Be sure to join me next week for my annual week of Christmas Treats! I will be posting daily, Monday through Friday, and have some amazing new recipes to share with you.

Now, on to the list of games…

Blokus Game is a favorite of everyone in my family. I especially like to play it with my 7-year-old twins. It’s fun to see them develop skills for strategy. Would you by surprised if I told you sometime they beat me? They do, and I have no shame in admitting that I let them. The game is suggested for ages 5 and up, and requires 2-4 players. It retails for around $15.00

Loaded Questions is a great game that helps players get to know each other better. I think I have spent more time laughing while playing this game, than any other. Find yourself some funny friends and enjoy! It’s recommended for ages 12 and up and requires 4-6 players. However, in the past we have opted to play with up to 10 players. We just kept score on a pad of paper instead of using the game board. It retails for around $20.00

Telestrations the Telephone Game Sketched Out! is a fun game that is a mix between the popular game Pictionary and Telephone. The suggested appropriate age is 12 years and up, however kids a bit younger than that could play quite easily. You can have up to 8 players involved.  It retails for around $20.oo.

Image1Ticket To Ride is one of our favorite games. It’s a cross-country train adventure game. The game board is a large map of the United States with many of its major cities marked. Players build trains joining these cities to earn points and complete destinations. It’s fast-moving (as long as MyHandsomeHusband doesn’t ponder his options too long) and fun! It requires 2-5 players, is recommended for players 8 years and up and retails for around $40.00.

Bicycle Canasta Games Playing Cards I love a good game of Canasta. I’m sure this fun card game has been around as long as people have been chewing gum and baking pies. And I can see why. Love it. My teenagers have been learning to play the last few years and we have a good time. We usually play with four players, but you can play with 2, 3 or 6 as well. It’s recommended for ages 10 and up and usually costs $10.00 or less.

Qwirkle Board Game is a strategic match game. It’s recommended for ages 6 and up, requires 2-4 players and  retails for around $20.00 My friends Shane and Tricia introduced us this game to us last year. It’s fun to play with adults and kids. I’m planning to buy it this year to add to my collection. Don’t tell my kids, okay?

Cranium Family Fun Game
is a great family game. It’s recommended for ages 6 and up, players can be broken up into 2, 3 or 4 teams (which means you can play with a large crowd) and it retails for around $50 on Amazon though I have seen it other places for much cheaper. Teams are asked to do a variety of fun activities during the game including molding clay, using a some intellect, acting out phrases and even answering questions. It’s a lot of fun!

Skip BoSKIP BO Card Game This fun card game was introduced to me by my new brother-in-law Peter Derrek. It’s an easy-going game you can play while you have a nice chat with your friends or family. Recommended for ages 7 and up, it requires 2-6 players and retails for around $10.00.

CarcossonieCarcassonne Basic Game I love this game. I try to get anyone and everyone I can to play it with me whenever possible. Sometimes when my kids see me rounding the corner with it in my arms they pretend to be asleep on the couch. Not because they don’t love it and all…they are just tired of losing to me. 🙂 Bwahahahahahaha. I will warn you that the rules are a bit tricky to understand at first, but once you have it down its pretty simple. It’s similar to Settlers of Catan, only it doesn’t take nearly as long to play. Players work with tiles to build roads, castles and farming areas. It takes a fair amount of strategy (I can only win when I play with my kids…I get slaughtered if I play with any of my brothers in law. Go figure! I’m a girl with a simple mind, I suppose). It’s recommended for ages 8 and up, requires 3-5 players and retails for around $25.oo.

Quidler
Quiddler
is a fun, easy (and cheap) card game where players earn points based on how many words they can spell with their cards. It’s recommended for ages 10 and up, requires 2-6 players (we have played with as many as 8) and costs around $12.00.

Image147 Wonders is an awesome game my friend Julie introduced me. It takes a while to figure out the rules, (search for a You Tube video tutorial on how to play to speed up the “rule reading” process, like Julie did. She’s a good friend, right! 🙂 Players build empires from ancient civilizations. The graphics are really beautiful and it’s fun to come up with different strategies for winning. It’s recommended for players age 10 and up, requires 3-7 players and is around $30.00

Image19Scrabble Crossword Game This is one of my families all time favorite games. We don’t use the board, just the letter blocks. We play a version of speed scrabble that’s really fun. I wrote a detailed post about it a couple of years ago. You can access that post HERE. I would recommend it for ages 8 and up, you can as few as two players and up to 10. It retails for around $15.00.

We love playing any game together–some of our favorites are Scrabble, Yahtzee and Apples To Apples. We may have to try some from your list too.

We love, love, love 5 crowns. It is interesting for adults and easy enough for younger ages to play. It is fast moving but you can still carry on a conversation as you play.

Our favorite family game is Apples to Apples. It always gets us talking! Sometimes, it gets a little feisty, but it’s so much fun!
