Ninja Blender Giveaway, baby!

by Jamie

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

Today, I really REALLY wanted to post a fabulous new recipe for you all. That was my plan all week-long, you see. But as luck would have it, my good intentions were rudely interrupted by fact that my kitchen sink simply decided to come unglued from her usual spot and fell right out from under the counter-top leaving me with no running water (or sink!) in my kitchen and 500 dirty dishes just begging to be cleaned.

This is not a joke.

Would I lie to you?

No way, man. I would not.

Good times around here, my friends. After I washed the previously mentioned 500 dishes (give or take 450) in my bathtub during the late night hours, I had a good nights rest and woke up ready and willing to serve my family cheap, five dollar pizza for the duration my small kitchen crisis. (Which should be over in the next 24 hours or so. At least that was the good news given to me today by MyHandsomeHusband aka Repair Man of Wonder).

And so, dear readers, instead of a new recipe for you today I am giving away one of my favorite kitchen appliances of all time.

Isn’t she a beauty!

I would love to give one of you lucky readers a brand spanking new Ninja Kitchen System 1200 (BL700), complete with a small and large pitcher and many different cutting blades (including a whipping blade and dough hook).

I absolutely adore this contraption. I use it for all kinds of things, including smoothie making, chopping nuts, veggies, blending up graham cracker crumbs for crusts, making salad dressings, whipping cream, blending dips..etc, etc, etc…I have even used it in a pinch to make cookie dough and bread dough! Amazing, it is.

I use mine every day.

Just like I used to use my kitchen sink every day.

Until she went rogue on me. Dang thing. Hoping once she has been restored to her full glory, we can be friends again. She and I spend a lot of time together after all. 🙂

To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave me a comment telling me one of your kitchen mishaps. (Goodness knows we all have them!) Did you accidentally pour freshly made gravy down the sink? Did you burn your husbands birthday cake? Did your chicken soup boil over while you were eating chocolate and reading a great book?

I would love to hear your stories. Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, right! You may enter from now until Thursday March 6th. Winner will be announced and contacted on Friday March 7th.

Good luck, everyone!

When I first got married I tried to make my new husband breakfast in bed… needless to say I didn’t know what I was doing, however, I thought I would try. I turned on the fire under the pan to get it hot, I put the butter in the pan to melt and started to crack the eggs. I noticed the fire was too high so I grabbed the handle of the pan and the handle fell off and some of it had melted on the burner. Oh, smoke started pouring from the pan and the fire alarm went off. Our cute little apartment was filled with smoke and it smelled horrible. My husband had woke up by this time and just stood there looking at me because I almost burned our apartment down. I do believe I get an “A” for effort. That was 20 years ago, and I must say I have come a long way since, but we both still laugh at my first cooking experience.

My greatest mishap to date is the time I totally wrecked the garbage disposal. I had made a casserole that my husband didn’t like. Only half of the 9×13 had been eaten. I had the bright idea to disposal the remaining. That much noodle did not make it safely through my garbage disposal. My husband tried to plunge it with no success. The ground up noodles actually exploded back up on us. When we finally called our plumber, he had to go into our basement and cut the pipe. So much food was packed into the pipe I actually heard the mess hit the floor in the basement. The plumber’s “oh no” was so loud I heard it upstairs. Needless to say that my husband still doesn’t think fondly on that casserole!

I got distracted and let a pot full of maple syrup boil over and totally scorch…that’s a day’s worth of simmering outdoors in a roaster, and a 40:1 ratio of sap to finished product, not to mention the loss of the pan!

When I first met my husband I decided to do something nice for him and clean up after his breakfast of bacon and eggs — made in his favorite cast iron pan. Having never used a cast iron pan before, I quickly took a brush and soap and hot water and scrubbed the heck out of it, not knowing that I shouldn’t ever do that. Now I know better!

Our freezer went out and all the hamburger thawed out. (Half of beef). I had to work so left 14 year old son home with instructions how to cook it then with batch drain down sink with disposal running with hot water. Needless to say he forgot the part about disposal and hot water. When i got home it looked like oatmeal cookie dough. Pluged sink so bad i had to have plumber come out.

The first meal I cooked my husband after we were married was a roast. Everything was ready except for pouring the gravy into the glass bowl. Without thinking, I picked up the gravy pan and set the glass bowl on the very warm burner that I had just used to make the gravy. I poured the gravy into the bowl and turned to get the spoon to put in the bowl. Just as I went to put the spoon in the bowl of gravy it blew up sending glass and gravy all over the very small apartment we were living in. I cried and apologized as we cleaned the mess up together. My sweet husband said the dinner was great, even without gravy.

Thinking the oven was turned on; I left the pot roast “cooking” for an hour. Lets just say we had left overs that night.

I made cobbler the other night for a dinner party with some friends at my place. I cut the recipe in half and forgot to cut the topping in half. It resulted in an explosion all over the oven complete with smoke. We nearly had to evacuate.

While canning salsa with a steamer canner, I accidentally let the water boil out. Things got a little hot in there and when I took the lid off and the bottles were exposed the the room temperature, they started to explode! I had salsa everywhere, including the ceiling.

Oh my goodness. Where do I start? 🙂
I was in my first apartment in IL, my parents lived in IN. I was boiling water and set the stove on fire. The first person I called? Yep. That would be MY DAD, in Indiana. He told me to grab the baking soda and throw it on there and call the landlord in the morning. Thankfully I was right there and didn’t do too much damage to the curtains that were right by the stove.
Turns out the element on the electric stove I had shorted out and caught fire. I didn’t live that one down until I finally moved out of that apartment. The landlord said that was a first, one of his tenants setting fire to the stove while boiling water. 🙂

I was making Thanksgiving dinner for myself and my husband for the first time ever. I was very excited to make his favorite – pumpkin pie. But I was on a health kick at the time and decided to try a lite recipe. For some reason it never set at all so it ended up being pumpkin soup (and not in a good way). My husband was so disappointed!!

My most recent mishap had to do with making my own pumpkin filling for pumpkin pies. I had my cooked pumpkin in my blender blending it. It wasn’t really doing anything, so I took the lid off and shut off the blender and stuck my wooden spoon in it to remove the pumpkin from the side of the blender and to my horror, the blender’s blades hadn’t completely stopped spinning and it shredded part of my wooden spoon. All of the pumpkin was ruined by the shredded wooden spoon pieces. Needless to say, our pumpkin pies were made with canned pumpkin that year..lol

I was making lemon bars for my dad and after I baked the crust I poured the filling on put it in the oven and set the timer. When the timer went off and the bars were nowhere near done. I turned off the oven not the timer.

When my daughter was about 11 months old she was crawling around the kitchen while I was working at the sink. My little one crawled into the pantry and managed to tip over a super-size Wesson oil jug onto the floor. The lid wasn’t on tightly and so there sat my little one in a puddle of cooking oil!! What a mess to clean up!! I was a young mama at that time and I quickly decided that things happen and you better learn to laugh them off! Thanks for the chance to go down Memory Lane, Jamie!

The first time I made Thanksgiving dinner I didn’t know you had to remove the plaste pouch of parts and it melted to the turkey. It was basted with butter on the outside and plastic on the inside and it smelled really bad.

So this one is pretty gross, and my mother was actually the one who did it, but I was there and discovered it first. So the whole family was at my parent’s house, and my mom had made a delightful homemade cake for dessert. Well, we had just dished up the cake and everyone was getting ready to partake. I, of course, was the first one ready to shovel in a mouthful, but as I put it to my lips, I happened to look down and notice some strange little flecks all over my cake. Luckily I didn’t finish my bite because upon further investigation, I figured out that the little flecks were hundreds of tiny hairs all over my piece of cake! I screamed for everyone to drop their forks. It turned out that my mom had cut my brother’s hair in the kitchen earlier that day, and she used one of her kitchen towels to drape over his shoulders. (Bad idea.) She later forgot about it and used that same towel to cover her cake!

I married an Italian, but had no idea how to cook, so his grandmother took me under her wing and taught me the basics. And because I love her sauce recipe, I never use the jarred stuff. One day I was making this huge batch of sauce and forgot to cover the pot. Well it boiled down, over, up and out of the pot. All over the kitchen. I was scrubbing that kitchen for days. Now I use a spatter guard and simmer on low.

I under baked the last layer of my son’s birthday cake, which, of course involved another trip to the store. Of course I didn’t realize I didn’t have enough eggs to remake the cake when I was at the store the first time, so back to the store I went…so frustrating. 😉

My then 5 year old son had requested a special birthday cake that I had put hours of decorating into. I was holding the cake on a tray and my daughter was bent down on the floor picking something up. Because of the angle of the tray, I didn’t see her come up under it with her head hitting it until the tray lifted from my hands and I frantically grabbed for it, tipping it sideways and onto the floor into a huge mess.

I had baked toffee cake brownies for my husbands birthday. My first batch I left to cool on my counter and my 128 lb yellow lab discovered and ate the pan. I baked another batch–thinking I was clever I placed it on top of the fridge to cool. Well I obviously was not thinking clearly on that one because part of the pan was on the edge of the door. When I went to open the freezer door, the pan flew off the top of the fridge, dented the floor, and crashed. I was devastated.

I had thawed the meat for a meatloaf, but was running late getting home. I called my thirteen year old daughter to make the meat loaf and put it in the oven. I gave her what I thought were detailed instructions, how to preheat the oven, to mix the bread, onions, milk, seasons, etc., in the blender, and set the oven timer. What I neglected to explain was to mix the ingredients into the meat. (I thought she knew that.) Instead we came home to the pleasant aroma of dinner in the oven, but she had poured the blender mixture over the top of the ground beef and baked it. It was the strangest meatloaf ever, but I never again gave instructions and assumed that someone would know what to do if I left out a step. And my daughter never made a meatloaf like that again. In fact, she turned out to be a wonderful cook.

I mistook the salt for sugar when making chocolate chip cookies in college. They tasted like chocolate chip potato chips. That and when learning to cook I thought a bulb of garlic was the same as a clove of garlic. Shrimp scampi has never been so smelly or horrendous.

I forgot I had put a kettle of water on the stove to boil while I was cleaning our apartment. The lid wasn’t on tight so when the water boiled it never made the kettle squeal. It must’ve been on the burner for over an hour before I smelled the kettle burning. I ran into the kitchen and paint from the kettle had actually melted onto the burner and was chipping and popping off. I had to throw the kettle into an empty flower pot on our back porch in order to get it to stop smoking and make the paint stop popping everywhere. Thankfully I didn’t burn the whole place down!

When I was 10 my mother allowed me to bake. I woke up one morning to bake blueberry muffins. I turned on the oven to preheat. Shortly after, I smelled something burning, but I had not put the muffins in the oven yet. I opened the oven to see a package of cookies (that my mother stashed in the oven to keep fresh) on fire inside the oven. I woke up my mom by saying, “Mom, could you come put out the fire in the oven?” My poor mother.

I attempted homemade oreos a few weeks back. Not just any oreos, Valentine’s Day oreos! my dough wouldn’t come together; I kept adding flour and water in the hopes that it would form. The dough was so sticky and thick that my hand mixer was getting clogged up, so I moved it to the stand mixer. my precious KitchenAid didn’t even know what to make of it! It finally appeared to be the consistency of dough so I let it chill. By this time I’d used about 4 bowls for the dough and had black food coloring splattered all over the kitchen and myself. I go to make the filling, and didn’t have a good grip on the bowl when I turned the handmixer on-bright pink globs of butter and sugar flew all over. I persevered! I pre-heated my oven and got the dough out to cut out my hearts…the dough stuck to everything it touched. I finally managed to get 6 lopsided hearts cut out and baked them and baked them some more and a little more. They came out and tasted nothing like oreos. Three hours in the kitchen and nothing to show for it but a massive mess and pink and black stained hands that I had to explain at work the next day!

When I was first married I was going to make a wonderful meal for my husband. I had my potatoes all diced up ready to be mashed. I was going to town with my mixer while my new hubby was in the living room listening to the racket. I was chasing my potatoes all around the bowl, they wouldn’t mash! After my hubby comes to see what’s going on, we realize I forgot to cook them first….. I’ve never lived that one down, but am proud to say that only happened once!

I have had many kitchen mishaps, but I have to mention the competition my mom and uncle (her brother) have going on. For years they they try to produce the most disgusting food item. I was making chili recently and thought I had grabbed out the chili powder out of the cupboard, but apparently it was the cinnamon. I could smell it the second I dumped it in the crockpot, but there was no way to get it all out. At that moment I knew that I had given my dad too bad of a time when years ago he accidentally dumped nutmeg instead of pepper into our mashed potatoes!

I think my disposal is related to your kitchen sink! Large dinner party with guests and mashed potatoes on the menu. I got home late from work and was rushing to peel all the potatoes and get them on to boil. I ran the disposal several times as I went but the peels and quantity were too much and the sink stopped up and the disposal jammed. I quickly put a large bath towel in the sink to “cover up the mess etc” and of course, one of the “super cook” guests noticed the bath towel and wanted to know “why?” and in the kitchen. (I thought I could get away with no one noticing). I went on to finish fixing dinner–everything went well until there was a loud “belch” from the kitchen. (I had dumped baking soda and vinegar into the “mess” before I covered it up) Sure enough–it worked–the peels and mess started down the drain and the rest bubbled up into the sink and bath towel. If it had just been my family at home this would have worked without a hitch–now EVERYONE had to hear the story. (I’m a Home Ec major–strong areas are textiles–clothing construction and early childhood education–thus the reason I LOVE Jamie Cooks It UP!)The kitchen is not my strongest area!! Needless to say this story is a “favorite” among our friends and family. Good thing I like a good laugh, too!

Stayed up late one night last week to make a “From scratch” fresh strawberry coffee cake to take to work the following morning. The recipe didn’t include how many minutes to cook – just said “Until nicely browned.” “OK – I’m pretty kitchen-savvy I can handle it,” I thought. HA! It bubbled over into my oven, making an awful burnt smell waking up the rest of the house. Fortunately, I don’t have a smoke detector right in the kitchen! After placing another pan under to try to control any further damage, I waited and watched. The outer edge got nicely browned, and the middle seemed done, too. I set it out to cool. In the morning it was totally cooled, it was still like SOUP in the middle – I left it sitting on the stop top and stopped at Publix and bought donuts to take to work instead.
