Ninja Blender Giveaway, baby!

by Jamie

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

Today, I really REALLY wanted to post a fabulous new recipe for you all. That was my plan all week-long, you see. But as luck would have it, my good intentions were rudely interrupted by fact that my kitchen sink simply decided to come unglued from her usual spot and fell right out from under the counter-top leaving me with no running water (or sink!) in my kitchen and 500 dirty dishes just begging to be cleaned.

This is not a joke.

Would I lie to you?

No way, man. I would not.

Good times around here, my friends. After I washed the previously mentioned 500 dishes (give or take 450) in my bathtub during the late night hours, I had a good nights rest and woke up ready and willing to serve my family cheap, five dollar pizza for the duration my small kitchen crisis. (Which should be over in the next 24 hours or so. At least that was the good news given to me today by MyHandsomeHusband aka Repair Man of Wonder).

And so, dear readers, instead of a new recipe for you today I am giving away one of my favorite kitchen appliances of all time.

Isn’t she a beauty!

I would love to give one of you lucky readers a brand spanking new Ninja Kitchen System 1200 (BL700), complete with a small and large pitcher and many different cutting blades (including a whipping blade and dough hook).

I absolutely adore this contraption. I use it for all kinds of things, including smoothie making, chopping nuts, veggies, blending up graham cracker crumbs for crusts, making salad dressings, whipping cream, blending dips..etc, etc, etc…I have even used it in a pinch to make cookie dough and bread dough! Amazing, it is.

I use mine every day.

Just like I used to use my kitchen sink every day.

Until she went rogue on me. Dang thing. Hoping once she has been restored to her full glory, we can be friends again. She and I spend a lot of time together after all. 🙂

To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave me a comment telling me one of your kitchen mishaps. (Goodness knows we all have them!) Did you accidentally pour freshly made gravy down the sink? Did you burn your husbands birthday cake? Did your chicken soup boil over while you were eating chocolate and reading a great book?

I would love to hear your stories. Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, right! You may enter from now until Thursday March 6th. Winner will be announced and contacted on Friday March 7th.

Good luck, everyone!

One time a friend and I decided to make cupcakes and send them to some guy friends out of state. (we were about 18 at the time) We made the batter and baked some cupcakes and decided to try to microwave one and see if it was faster. we took a mini cupcake and figured if it took about 20 min in the oven about 10 would do in the microwave….. after about 5 min i went to check on it to find her microwave filled with smoke!!! we stopped the timer and opened the door and the smoke came pouring out! the fire alarm was going off and the cupcake was more like a piece of charcoal than it was a cupcake! you could pound the cupcake on the counter and it sounded like a brick! we were lucky we didn’t catch her parents new house on fire!!

When I was about 10 I loved baking and mom and dad had gone to town. I loved doing different things to recipes so as I was making some cookies I decided to flavor them with some cherry cough syrup and they really tasted good. Mom tasted them when she got home and said they were good what did I put in them and when I told her she made me throw them all out. :^(

The latest mishap I had was I had made something in the crock pot with chicken but instead on putting the crock pot on high I cooked it on low and didn’t realize that until I went to shred the chicken which I now realized wasn’t cooked all the way. So then I shredded the nearly cooked chicken and out it back in the crock pot and turned it on to high this time intending on only leaving it running for about 30 minutes. I came back and checked it after the 30 minutes dished up dinner ate and left with the family and left the crock out running for 2 HOURS! I came home to a very cooked very stuck dinner in the bottom if my crock pot and a horrible smell filling the house. Oops!!

My most embarrassing kitchen moment: Shortly after I was married (1975) I decided to impress my new mother-in-law with my cooking prowess by fixing a wonderful hamburger dinner (hamburgers a-la egg noodles, gravy, salad, veggies). I was so nervous, as I was cooking in her tiny kitchen. Plus, I’d had very little ‘cooking instruction’ from my mother, so was truly winging the whole event.

My mother-in-law hovered next to me the whole time I was preparing my hamburger meat. I had her iron skillet on the stove heating. In my heightened state of anxiety, I thoroughly sprinkled the pan with pepper (instead of olive oil). Instantly the pepper ‘exploded’ into the air!! This resulted in serious coughing/sneezing fits and instant evacuation of the kitchen and house (it was a small space)! Needless to say I was humiliated and embarrassed; and was not allowed back into her kitchen.

One of my dear friends brother passed away and one of the things I was taking for the meal after the funeral was Mac and Cheese. I was doubling the recipe so imagine all the chews I had to grate. I finished and was ready to combine the sauce and pasta and decided to taste it. It was sooo sweet. I had used powdered sugar instead of flour to thicken the sauce. Fortunately I had the ingredients to start again.

Several years ago we were having hamburgers and I fried up some bacon and then put it on some paper towels to drain. I started cleaning up the kitchen waiting for the burgers to be done and tossed the paper towels (along with the bacon) into the trash. When we started assembling the burgers my husband asked where the bacon was. I looked around and realized what I had done. The bacon was sitting on the top of the trash on some tin foil so we figured it was still good and used it on our burgers anyway. To this day my husband will ask me, “What’cha makin’, trash bacon?”

I had put a 5 lb b7 bone roast on for supper. cooked it with water for about 20 minutes, add my water, potatoes, carrots, and onions. When I was about done, I had to leave and pick up a child. I asked my husband to remove it from the oven and dish it up as I would be right back. Upon returning, the roast was on a platter, the veggies were in a bowl. . I asked where the gravy was? His dumbfounded look told me something was wrong. He didn’t think I wanted what was in the pan, so he poured it down the disposal. I was so angry, I picked up the lid to my roaster and started pounding it on the counter. To make a lond story shorter, we had no gravy, and I had to go buy a new roaster 35.00$.. I learned to remove food from oven and replace when I got back.

I was frantically making chocolate chip cookies to take to girls camp; also making macaroni and cheese to feed my kids for lunch.
I’m my haste I dumped the box of macaroni into my Bosch mixer which was busily mixing all of the other ingredients minus the chocolate chops. Needless to say the cookies had an extra crunch, but those crazy girls ate everyone if them.

I know that at least a few times I have been mixing more than one bowls and added the wrong ingredient. Like baking powder to a soup instead of the biscuits!

It was a Saturday morning and I decided to make an amazing breakfast for my family. I heated up my waffle iron and started mixing all the ingredients to make buttermilk waffles. They were perfectly delicious. After everyone had finished I told them I had put a secret ingredient in them. When they couldn’t figure out what it was I told them I used real butter instead of margarine. But then I realized… I completely forgot to put the melted butter in. It was still sitting in the microwave. I couldn’t believe it, I completely forgot to but the butter in. Needless to say, we all laughed.

When I was first married and a non-cook (think burning boiling water)…my friend made pesto rolls and I thought how wonderful it would be if I made some for my husband. Well, I didn’t know the difference between a clove of garlic (what the recipe called for) and a head of garlic (what I actually spent an hour mincing and put in the pesto). You can imagine the results! Ever the diligent husband, he took a big bite and burned his poor throat from all that garlic…and promptly took us out for a lovely, inexpensive meal. (I also grabbed cinnamon instead of taco seasoning once…glad I’m not the only to have ever done that!)

The worst mishap I can remember is trying to quickly cook frozen chicken breasts by cooking them in water on the stovetop, over HIGH heat. I then laid on the couch and fell asleep! I woke up to a smoke filled house, a baby that could’ve suffered smoke inhalation, and of course smoke alarm loud as can be! Oh and don’t forget the burned pan I had to toss ’cause that burned mess just would NOT be scrubbed away!

When my children were little, I would start cooking something for supper, and go check on them or do something with them (multitasking), momentarily forgetting about what was on the range top. On more than one occasion, something would burn in the pan. I would put the pan outside the back door. My husband always wondered what would be for supper when he’d see the pan outside! We laugh about this now.

I once made a giant batch of spaghetti to freeze and instead of adding frozen basil cubes I added frozen spinach cubes. And I must have added double because the sauce was bitter and disgusting and I had to throw the whole thing out. So sad!

My children are not letting me live this down after over 20 years.. it was a holiday and i was trying to hurry dinner which was cooking on the bbq. I was moving right along with all the sides and my son said they had to go shortly.. i put the steaks on too soon and everything tasted like lighter fluid. they tried not to hurt my feelings too bad, but the meat really was unedible. sigh… i have since learned and have had better turn outs..lol

When surprise company is coming, I have a tendency to grab things off the counter and stow them in the oven. However, I will forget to check the oven as I preheat it. I have melted many mixing bowls and other plastic utensils and containers.

For me it’s walking away from a recipe I’m making to help a crying child, change a diaper, get the phone, etc…and I come back and put in double the salt or leave out something I thought I’d already put in…of course it’s always something important! I’ve done this on several occasions!

OK. Show of hands….how many of you have pulled something out of the refrigerator by holding the cap, only to discover that the cap had not been tightened? (Please don’t let me be the only one!) Anyhow, orange juice is a major pain to clean up when it goes under the frig, on the lower cabinets and all over the floor. So sticky!!! I never grab a bottle by the cap anymore!

As a new bride I was excited to cook my very first turkey dinner! I was all done just needed to make the gravy. I had a brand new, never used gravy shaker that I was excited to use. I put the water and flour in it and started to shake it! It exploded EVERY where, cup boards, ceiling and floor. Nobody told me NOT to use hot water in it 🙂 I cried as I cleaned my mess up. Now 32 years later it’s a funny memory that I can laugh at!

I was making your Chocolate chip cookie recipe with my grandkids, ages 2 and 5. (They love these cookies by the way). We had carefully added the flour to the mixer when my cute grandson, Hunter, cut the mixer on high. Needless to say we all looked like ghosts! My grand daughter had a shocked look on her face, and sweet little Hunter (age 2), along with his grand dad had a laugh! It was a mess but we all had fun cleaning it up!

My family has always loved mother’s Steamed Carrot Pudding.Deciding two year’s ago, to go a head and try making it and give to my brothers for Christmas, I got all the ingredients together. Found out I needed Allspice. Put everything on hold and went to the store to purchase some. So proud of myself when they turned out looking so wonderful. Waiting for my brothers to tell me how good they were and to have them say. “Yes, it was good but something was missing. Just not quite like Mom’s”. I could not figure it out. Went back to the pantry and went over every ingredient. There it was, the Allspice had never been opened. Last year’s was deemed a success..

One of my kitchen mishaps that my husband and son still remind me of was when I made a strawberry rhubarb pie to take to a friend’s house when we were invited over for dinner. Well some of the crust had gotten burn and I was scraping the burn part off while it was sitting on the counter and it slid right into the garbage pail. Well, needless to say we stopped at the local bakery on the way to the dinner party. Thanks for a great giveaway!

I was making mini cupcakes for my daughter’s blessing party. I went to take them out of the oven and they slipped and all landed face down inside my oven. In my hormonal craziness (give a girl a break,I had just had a baby a few weeks before) I sat down next to the oven and cried until my husband found me and helped me laugh about it.

Oh my goodness, some days I feel like my time in the kitchen is a continuous blooper reel. One of my most memorable was turning the burner on under a glass casserole dish without realizing I had and causing the pan to explode into little tiny pieces all over my mother in laws kitchen! The best part of the memory was her reaction, “Lawsy! Are you ok?” She taught me volumes in that moment!

While young and learning to bake I was trying my hand at doubling a cookie recipe for our large family of 10. Imagine my surprise when my mother discovered that I had not doubled, but quadrupled the recipe! The only container large enough to mix the cookies in was a pink plastic baby bathtub. Needless to say, we had enough and to spare!

Meatloaf, you say anyone can make a meatloaf. I always made meatloaf…a good meatloaf. But lately no matter when I try to make it, it turns out like baked mush or dry like a hockey puck. Either I add too much bread crumbs or I go the bread and milk method and add my other liquid condiments and it becomes a pile of mush that won’t even keep the “loaf” shape. I have to scoop it because slicing it is not an option. It does taste good thou.Until the spirit strikes again I will be sticking to things that actually do look and taste the way they are supposed to.

When I was a young cook and did not know what I was doing, I thought I would surprise my new husband with some baking powder biscuits for Sunday breakfast. Well, needless to say, they were not what we expected and in fact he called them hockey pucks. That did not make any points and that was the last time I made biscuits until a few years ago, some 50 years later. LOL.

My family loves garlic bread well any kind of bread really. Many times I have put on a wonderful spread of food and all that was needed to make the meal perfectly perfect was the hot bread waiting to come out of the oven. We all sit down to dinner and are so excited to be sharing a meal and enjoying each others company when we begin to smell something burning…the bread! But we scrape it off and press on! Builds character, don’t ya think?

If you cook enough, there are bound to be stories. One of my most recent is baking a fabulous chocolate cake. I’ve made it many times without issue…until now. Apparently, I either forgot the baking soda or it failed. There was no amount of additional baking time to salvage it. The edges cooked hard and the center…well the center was a gooey, globby, uncooked mess and garbage bound. The good news is that I’ve made it several more times with great success.

I have made every cooking mistake possible! I have put plastic pots on the stove, metal in the microwave, burnt marks in our kitchen floor, filled our house with smoke countless times! I even set my moms Buba-Keg on fire! When I told her I sounded really bored about it. Then I proceeded to slowly go around getting water to put it out. My mom ran in the kitchen grabbed the dogs water and through it on the fire! I guess that is one of my favorites!

My dad and I were taking my first turkey out of the oven for my first time hosting our family Thanksgiving dinner. It was a big turkey and some how we managed to drop it on the kitchen floor. I started to cry and my dad winked at me and whispered “We’ll just dust it off and no one will ever know!” The family was in the other room and never had a clue! Once again my dad saved the day!

I was making frosting for a birthday cake and was in a hurry. I put everything in the bowl and mixed and mixed, wondering why it wouldn’t come together right. I finally realized that I had been using cornstarch instead of powdered sugar. Oops! I didn’t have enough ingredients to remake the frosting so we just had cake.

I can think of many bloopers in the kitchen. One of the most memorable happened when I was about 14 and it was my job to get supper ready for the family. I took the already cooked stew out of the fridge turned on the oven placed the bowl in the oven and promptly went up to my room to read. My parents came home to a kitchen filled with smoke. The wires in the back of our old stove had heated up and charred the kitchen wall behind the stove and had almost caused a fire. I was then instructed to bring my book to the kitchen when I was cooking.

The worst mishap happened when I was a teenager. I went to make a smoothie and did not put the blender together right. I had everything in the blender and I turn it on. The pitcher fell off leaving nothing but the blade spinning. My first reaction was grab the blade and stop it. So that is what I did. I slapped my hand down on the blade and turned it off with the other hand. As I was wiping the milk off my hands I looked around and noticed that the kitchen looked like something out of the best horror movie. Then I looked at my hand and screamed the best horror movie scream ever and ran to the bathroom. My parents came running in and screamed followed by the rest of the dinner party and my family. Everything turned out fine and my nick name was Blender all through High School. For my wedding I got 3 “Kristie- Proof Blenders” They all had the blades removed! I think this is prize is most fitting!

Oh my goodness, I have so many it’s ridiculous! One of my worst ones was when my husband and I were first married. I was making Spaghetti Bake and you have to cook the spaghetti and then you mix sausage and sour cream together and put them in a 9×13 pan and bake it with cheese on top. I had already cooked the spaghetti and turned the stove off. I had gotten down the 9×13 pan and was busy cutting up the sausage when suddenly KABOOM!!! There was a huge exploding sound and glass shards flew everywhere. Turns out I was so smart and had put the glass pan on top of the still hot burner. I was just so lucky that my back was turned so I only ended up with a few minor cuts…it could have been a lot worse!

Oh, my, I have had too many mishaps to count! The one that is literally “burned” into my memory is when I accidentally baked a batch of snickerdoodles until they were black. I mean coal black. It was bad. I immediately threw them out in the yard out of frustration. The next week I came home from work one day and found a new oven sitting in my kitchen. I called my landlord about it, and he said he had seen the “cookies” in the yard and figured it must be time for a new oven. Ha ha.

The first time I made Julia Child’s Boeuf Bourguignon, I made it in a pot that had a glass top. I followed the recipe exactly. It was so time consuming but tasted delicious. As I was taking it out of the oven to serve, the glass top shattered all over the oven and in the pot. I had to throw the whole thing out. Ugh! Disappointed doesn’t begin to describe how I felt at that moment.
