Ninja Blender Giveaway, baby!

by Jamie

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

Today, I really REALLY wanted to post a fabulous new recipe for you all. That was my plan all week-long, you see. But as luck would have it, my good intentions were rudely interrupted by fact that my kitchen sink simply decided to come unglued from her usual spot and fell right out from under the counter-top leaving me with no running water (or sink!) in my kitchen and 500 dirty dishes just begging to be cleaned.

This is not a joke.

Would I lie to you?

No way, man. I would not.

Good times around here, my friends. After I washed the previously mentioned 500 dishes (give or take 450) in my bathtub during the late night hours, I had a good nights rest and woke up ready and willing to serve my family cheap, five dollar pizza for the duration my small kitchen crisis. (Which should be over in the next 24 hours or so. At least that was the good news given to me today by MyHandsomeHusband aka Repair Man of Wonder).

And so, dear readers, instead of a new recipe for you today I am giving away one of my favorite kitchen appliances of all time.

Isn’t she a beauty!

I would love to give one of you lucky readers a brand spanking new Ninja Kitchen System 1200 (BL700), complete with a small and large pitcher and many different cutting blades (including a whipping blade and dough hook).

I absolutely adore this contraption. I use it for all kinds of things, including smoothie making, chopping nuts, veggies, blending up graham cracker crumbs for crusts, making salad dressings, whipping cream, blending dips..etc, etc, etc…I have even used it in a pinch to make cookie dough and bread dough! Amazing, it is.

I use mine every day.

Just like I used to use my kitchen sink every day.

Until she went rogue on me. Dang thing. Hoping once she has been restored to her full glory, we can be friends again. She and I spend a lot of time together after all. 🙂

To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave me a comment telling me one of your kitchen mishaps. (Goodness knows we all have them!) Did you accidentally pour freshly made gravy down the sink? Did you burn your husbands birthday cake? Did your chicken soup boil over while you were eating chocolate and reading a great book?

I would love to hear your stories. Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, right! You may enter from now until Thursday March 6th. Winner will be announced and contacted on Friday March 7th.

Good luck, everyone!

I put a pan on the stove and turned the wrong burner on without realizing it. That would have been fine, except the burner that I turned on happened to have a can of oatmeal on it. (You know, the large cylinder can that is made of cardboard. For the life of me I can’t remember what they are called.) I walked back into the kitchen to a towering oatmeal of inferno. I’m not sure how I didn’t burn down our apartment. I quickly extinguished the flames and tried to clean up the fiery stench left behind. I don’t think I ever got that smoke stink out of the wall. I scrubbed for hours on it.

Before I really learned to cook or read a recipe I decided to make our families favorite chocolate cake from scratch. I ended up adding a tablespoon of salt instead of a teaspoon and used granulated sugar instead of powdered in the frosting. Needless to say no one enjoyed my salty and grainy masterpiece! Thanks for the giveaway, I hope I win!:-)

Not too long ago I boiled up a batch of spaghetti noodles. As usual when it was done I brought it over to the sink to dump it in the colander and drain off the water. Sadly, I didn’t notice until I had turned the pot upside down over the garbage disposal side of the sink that I had forgotten to put the colander in the sink. Many of my spaghetti noodles went right down in the garbage disposal. The real question then became do I try to save the ones that were just laying in the sink? How clean is it? I am pleading the 5th on that decision. 😉

I was newly married and wanted to make fried chicken and we had gotten a deep fryer as a gift. I breaded the chicken popped it into the deep fryer and pulled it out when it was golden brown, we sat down to eat it and cut into a breast to have it full of blood and running out like a horror movie. Its been over 40 years and I’m still nervous when frying chicken.

I left a pan on the stove, heating up oil to make scones, and left it too long! Walked back in the kitchen and there was a pillar of fire from my pan to the ceiling!! This was over ten years ago and I STILL AM THE PUN OF ALL THE KITCHEN MISHAP JOKES!!!!!

Kitchen mishaps happen all too often for me. The classic one is when I put something that needs refridgerated in the cupboard or pantry. That always frustrates me! We also just made kool aid popcorn the other day for the first time and didn’t break it up soon enough and it was hard as a rock and stuck hard onto the cookie sheet. I have wanted a ninja for a long time and hope this can turn my daily kitchen mishaps around!!! Thanks for doing this!

During college, I was making liver and onions in gravy for my husband-to-be in his apartment. He (still) has a habit of just placing a screw lid on top of spice containers. I go to pepper the finished dish out of the shaker lid, and dumped 4 oz. of black pepper into the skillet. 🙁

Last Thanksgiving I was draining the 5 plus pounds of potatoes so I could mash them. I lifted the colander and it fell apart and the potatoes went everywhere. It was a good thing we had started early because we had to do it all over again.
I was thinking of another thing that happened. I drove up and my neighbor asked me what that horrible smell was coming from my house. The babysitter had cooked frozen corn dogs in the microwave and had punched in 5 minutes instead of 50 seconds! The smell was horrendous! She felt so bad. The smell eventually went away after lots of baking powder and scrubbing.

The one that comes to mind is when my husband and I were both in the kitchen and the blood from a hamburger tray got dripped all over the dessert we were about to take to someone’s house. We still chuckle about that one from time to time.

I had everyone over for Christmas Eve. I made a turkey like I had a ton of times. This time it didn’t cook. So my husband and bil ran to the grocery store to by lunch meat. Great holiday dinner!

I recently decided to paint my kitchen cabinets. Well that led to me deciding I needed to paint the walls, which led to me needing to paint the ceiling, which led to me needing to tile, which led to new countertops and on and on and on. My project which I thought would take a week embed up taking about three months. Just as I needed the end of the project I was up one night painting until 2:00 am. I was carrying the almost full can of paint over to the counter when I tripped over the shop vac and the paint flew all over the almost completed kitchen. Sigh…

I tried making a bigger batch of the crockpot mashed potatoes for thanksgiving dinner to take to my brother’s. We were gone for several hours to my husband’s family’s dinner while they were cooking and when we got home (with only 30 minutes until we had to leave for the next dinner)I proceeded to start mashing the potatoes, but since it was a bigger batch they were still a little bit firm. I put them in a bowl and tried microwaving them to soften them up. Got them out dumped them into my kitchenaid thinking that might break them up better. No luck. We finally had to put them into a colander in batches and while my husband held it over a bowl, I used a rubber spatula to firmly press them through trying to leave out the lumps. What a fiasco!!! We were 30 minutes late to Thanksgiving dinner (their food all prepared)and the potatoes weren’t my best work (at least the lumps were gone!). Next time I’ll definitely remember to start a bigger batch earlier to give them more time!! My mouth never wanted to spew profanities so badly in my life — but you’ll be happy to know I refrained. 🙂

I was fixing Thanksgiving dinner for my family. I took out a platter to put the turkey on and set it on the stove. Next thing I knew, there was a loud pop and the platter had shattered. I forgot that the eye on the stove was still hot.

I have had several mishaps in the kitchen throughout my years of cooking. The most recent mishap was when I made some BBQ chicken. I had put the chicken in the oven and then went downstairs to help my daughter clean her room. We got sidetracked and I completely forgot about the chicken in the oven! When I went upstairs to the kitchen (a couple of hours later)they were a burnt, crispy, black mess. It was more like BBQ chicken jerky when that was all said and done.

My mishap was at my parent’s house. Big family get together, and I put a glass pan on the stove just for a minute. Of course I got busy and the pan stayed on the glass cooktop. The pan blew up. Hot glass shards everywhere! First step was removing barefooted children. The glass was so hot it burned through my mom’s vinyl flooring. She had to get a whole new floor put in. She went with tile this time, and now she thinks my personal goal is to break all of her dishes…. So embarassing.

I was making a candy with Saltine crackers and a brown sugar/butter coating. I laid out the crackers on a cookie sheet and poured on the brown sugar mixture (as the recipe suggested), although it didn’t dawn on me that I should be using a cookie sheet with raised sides.
Needless to say, brown sugar mixture went rolling off the cookie sheet shortly after I slipped it in the oven. Yikes – boiling, sticky, burnt brown sugar coated the bottom of the oven! That smell lingered for days, despite multiple thorough cleanings of the kitchen.

My kitchen mistake, I got busy talking on the phone while making mashed potatoes and totally forgot and took a nap later to come in the kitchen a couple hours later to find the water had boiled out and an awesome hard black concoction. It’s been several years and I still get carp for being the only person to ever burn mashed potatoes.

We were having guests from Austria over for dinner, and decided to take them out in the boat before dinner instead of after because it looked like it was going to rain later in the day. After the boat trip, I didn’t have enough time to slow cook my pork chops and gravy, so I put them into the pressure cooker. It exploded!! The pot jumped off the stove onto the floor and gravy spewed and shot through the relief opening across my kitchen and through my family room! Somehow though, the lid never came off the pot. My step-mother cleaned up the mess while I opened the pot. I added more gravy, put the pressure cooker back on the stove, and carried on. The meal turned out fine! How I pulled it off, I’ll never know!!

I was baking chicken when I smelled something burning. I had set the baking sheet on the counter before putting it in the oven and a chip clip with a magnet had stuck to it without my knowledge. What a mess in my oven!

We went out of town for Labor Day and when we came home our entire kitchen and basement(below the kitchen) was flooded. Our pressurized line for the reverse osmosis system broke while we were away! We have had MANY kitchen mishaps from broken appliances, disposals, faucets, to cooking blunders such as my birthday cake curse. 🙂

I am pretty sure you live close to me, you can come and use my sink and dishwasher if you need to!
My story is that when we were first married my husband wanted to cook for me so he left the 9×13 to cool on the stove top on a hot burner and it exploded. Needless to say that 13 years later I still cringe every time he wants to make something. I just tell him it’s the thought that counts and then I try to persuade him to let me cook.

I decided to make deviled eggs and put them on the stove to boil. Got a phone call from my daughter to come pick her up. Her coach wouldn’t them leave on time and by the time I got home the eggs had exploded onto my ceiling. Needless to say I don’t make deviled eggs anymore!

Instead of setting the timer on the microwave for someone to practice the piano the microwave itself was set and it was cooking away with nothing in it. It ended up burning up the microwave.
We had to buy a new microwave and this was not an old microwave, very sad thing.

One of my mishaps was when I was living at home with my parents- came home tired from sports practice, and my mom was outside showing the house to a siding salesman to get an estimate. I was so hungry I started to make a grilled cheese sandwich on the stove, and lay down on the couch for “just a minute” while the first side cooked. I awoke to banging on the door, my mom and the salesman had noticed black smoke coming out of the kitchen window. Boy,was my Mom mad at me for ruining her pan and stinking up the house! I don’t think I’ve made a grilled cheese since that day.

I once woke up and walked into the kitchen to make a pot of coffee just to find I was up to my ankles in water. It was winter, the pipes froze and burst with water(very cold) all over kitchen floor. Good thing I had a carpet cleaner.

A couple of years ago I realized one morning that our freezer was broken when I opened it up and everything looked really wet. Our meat was starting to thaw and everything! We were living in an apartment at the time and I had no other freezer so I quickly called up multiple friends of mine and stashed our frozen meats and other foods in 3 different freezers at 3 different friends’ houses because nobody had room to fit all of our food plus theirs! Thankfully, we got a new fridge shortly after.

Way back when my husband and I were newlyweds, we worked hard and made a delicious Italian chicken dish. We set it on broil to cook. We got distracted by a new movie that had come out (at the dollar movie theater) and on a whim decided to hurry and catch the movie because it was starting soon. We completely forgot about the chicken cooking until we arrived home from the movie to smoke and a completely black chicken “brick”. Luckily there was no fire. 🙂

Most of my kitchen mishaps have to do with me forgetting that my black lab, Bo, has no self control when it comes to food being left on the counter. Time and time again I have left and come back to the kitchen only to find him devouring what I just fixed for dinner. When will I ever learn?!?!?!?

Got up one morning expecting a fresh cup of coffee (had set the automatic timer the night before) and my old-school coffee maker had streamed hot water everywhere on the counter but none into the carafe. A mess to clean and no fresh coffee. I probably did not position the filter basket “just right” and created this mishap.

I had a sink mishap also. My water wouldn’t drain. Very clogged. Put in a new disposal. Called plumber to fix pipes underneath the sink. Found out the main pipe going to the basement was gushing out water. Tore a whole in my wall to put pipe in. Probably didn’t have a working sink or running water for a week in my kitchen. Plus lots of dishes piled up.

The funniest, or ridiculous, part of this mishap is that I didn’t learn my lesson the first, second, or third time. In my first apartment I was peeling potatoes into the sink and put the perks down the disposal. When I turned it on, rather than sending them down the drain, it backed the sink up. Since then, I’ve done it a couple more times, with potatoes & cucumbers. I now peel them into the garbage can – less mess & happy husband!

Super embarrassing: I volunteered to make cookies (with some students) for the entire faculty and staff at my school. Being a “resident expert” and supposed “great cook” I ended up with flat, runny cookies because I didnt put enough flour in ALL of the batters. Easy fix after I ruined about six dozen cookies. My poor, deflated ego.
