Ninja Blender Giveaway, baby!

by Jamie

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

Today, I really REALLY wanted to post a fabulous new recipe for you all. That was my plan all week-long, you see. But as luck would have it, my good intentions were rudely interrupted by fact that my kitchen sink simply decided to come unglued from her usual spot and fell right out from under the counter-top leaving me with no running water (or sink!) in my kitchen and 500 dirty dishes just begging to be cleaned.

This is not a joke.

Would I lie to you?

No way, man. I would not.

Good times around here, my friends. After I washed the previously mentioned 500 dishes (give or take 450) in my bathtub during the late night hours, I had a good nights rest and woke up ready and willing to serve my family cheap, five dollar pizza for the duration my small kitchen crisis. (Which should be over in the next 24 hours or so. At least that was the good news given to me today by MyHandsomeHusband aka Repair Man of Wonder).

And so, dear readers, instead of a new recipe for you today I am giving away one of my favorite kitchen appliances of all time.

Isn’t she a beauty!

I would love to give one of you lucky readers a brand spanking new Ninja Kitchen System 1200 (BL700), complete with a small and large pitcher and many different cutting blades (including a whipping blade and dough hook).

I absolutely adore this contraption. I use it for all kinds of things, including smoothie making, chopping nuts, veggies, blending up graham cracker crumbs for crusts, making salad dressings, whipping cream, blending dips..etc, etc, etc…I have even used it in a pinch to make cookie dough and bread dough! Amazing, it is.

I use mine every day.

Just like I used to use my kitchen sink every day.

Until she went rogue on me. Dang thing. Hoping once she has been restored to her full glory, we can be friends again. She and I spend a lot of time together after all. 🙂

To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave me a comment telling me one of your kitchen mishaps. (Goodness knows we all have them!) Did you accidentally pour freshly made gravy down the sink? Did you burn your husbands birthday cake? Did your chicken soup boil over while you were eating chocolate and reading a great book?

I would love to hear your stories. Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, right! You may enter from now until Thursday March 6th. Winner will be announced and contacted on Friday March 7th.

Good luck, everyone!

I was very ill with the flu with a very high fever. All I wanted was some chicken soup but all I had in my cupboards was Ramen chicken noodles. Not wanting to spend the time to make it in the stove, I opted to make it in the microwave to reduce time because I was not feeling well. When I came back into the kitchen to get my meal, the microwave was smoking just about on fire…. I forgot to add water to my noodles. 🙁 Needless to say I did not eat anything and went back to bed.

My worst kitchen disaster was 4yrs ago Thanksgiving. I had my oven loaded; turkey on one shelve and stuffing and sweet potatoes on the lower. Just as guests were arriving I went to pull the turkey out and baste one last time and the top oven rack slide and the turkey and ham tipped in the oven spilling all the hot juices in the stuffing and potatoes then it ran out of the oven into the bottom drawer and all over the floor. Worst ever…..

The most memorable mishap I’ve had, (and continue to get teased about) is that I used some Apple scented dish soap to clean out a pan that I was using for some Peanut Butter bars. Apparently, I didn’t rinse the pan well enough. The PB Bars tasted like soap, with a hint of apple flavoring. I still get requests from those people I made them for, to make them some, minus the Soap!

Came home at lunch one day and decided to boil a couple of eggs for tuna salad that evening. Forgot I put them on and went back to work. Came home to a barking dog, a screeching smoke alarm and egss shells blasted all over the wall by the stove! Now I make sure NOTHING is even sitting on the stove before I leave the house!!!

While hurrying to get my Christmas cookies made before I took the kids to school in the morning, I lost track of everything I was doing and my phone started ringing, thinking I was turning my mixer off, I turned it on high, and powdered sugar and butter went everywhere!

I made my husband cinnamon toast for breakfast when we were first married. Unfortunately, I used salt instead of sugar. The look on his face when he tasted it was priceless.

When I was younger, my mom always spinned the ketchup bottle round and round to get the last drop. One time she did it and the lid came off. Ketchup everywhere. I think we were cleaning ketchup for years.
A few weeks I go, I was walking across a carpeted room with a large bowl of salsa. I tripped. The bowl flew. Not a normal drop and spill, but something straight out of America’s Funniest Home Videos. There was salsa EVERYWHERE!!

I somehow burned broccoli (all the water evaporated) and put the hot pan on the counter. Walked away for a minute and ruined my counter!

I decided to ignore all of the rules of physics & blend a sauce that was still scalding hot. Went all over the kitchen. I will heed the warnings from now on.

So my mishap happened just a few weeks ago. While cooking I reached up to grab some spices and our sugar shaker fell out of the cabinet and landed on my glass stove top:( needless to say it cracked. We’ve still been cooking on it until we can replace it. I really hope it win!!
Thanks

My worst was when I grabbed the blender jar and poured in the soup to puree… forgetting that the bottom wasn’t on the jar… boiling soup all down the front of me and onto the floor.

Trying to hurry and clean up I put dish soap instead of dish washer soap in the dishwasher. We went out for a bit and came home to a kitchen full of bubbles. The kids thought it was fun, me… Not so much. I walked in to stop the dishwasher and ended up on my back. Haha took forever to clean up

This is actually not my mishap. . .but my 12 year old daughter’s. I was sitting in the garage supervising my younger boys playtime when she poked her head out of the door and said, “Ummmm Mommy. . .come quick. . .I’ve had a little mishap with the mixer.” She had gotten a bit too close with her long hair to my electric mixer while making cookies and her beautiful hair was totally twisted and tangled in the beaters. We have a good laugh about that to this day We BOTH still wish she would have let me photograph the moment–but her 12 year old self nixed that idea quickly!

My most memorable cooking mishap happened in jr. high home ec. I spilled some food as I was cooking and grabbed a paper towel to clean around the electric stove top. It caught fire! I quickly turned on the sink and extinguished the flame. Thankfully the teacher didn’t see and my classmates and I had a laugh – later. To this day, I am very careful when cleaning my stove.

3 of the 4 times we have had a specific couple over to our house I for dinner I have burned the bread. Once it wasn’t just burned black and to a crisp, the whole tray of garlic bread was actually on fire, with flames and everything. Talk about embarrassing!! Needless to say, the next time they are over, we are NOT having bread with our meal.

Put water on the stove to boil and completely forgot about it. The water boiled away and ruined the pot. So glad I didn’t burn the house down!

My kitchen mishap was on the grill and the one my sons do not let me forget. I was cooking ribs for dinner and trying to do everything to get ready. Well, the grill flared up (a lot) and the ribs were burnt to a crisp, I mean really burnt! Gotta love my sons, but they still refuse to let me cook ribs on the grill without reminding me about it first.

Due to an obvious brain cramp once, I boiled eggs in a shallow pan. No worries…I’ll just stay close by. Not the case; I was distracted and walked outside and one thing led to another. When I came back in, the water had all evaorated, the eggs were busted open with bits and pieces of egg and shells burned to the bottom of the pan. To this date, I know it was only the grace of God that kept that concoction from catching on fire. Ruined my Calphalon pan and left me with a reminder to never walk away from something that is on the stove!

I was making potato cheese soup in the crockpot and while I was adding the ingredients it called for 1/8 teaspoon of hot pepper. The next line called for a half cup of green onions. Well needless to say I put in 1/2 cup of hot pepper and did not realize this. Mind you I have made this recipe countless times. I served it for dinner it was a total disaster, and I ran out and had to pick up dinner. I have never made this mistake again and the soup was like putting fire in our mouths. Today we can laugh at it, but I was quite miffed at the time.

I was pouring boiled pasta into a colander to strain it and the colander tipped over putting all of my fresh hot pasta down the garbage disposal. That delayed dinner a bit. I got a new, more stable colander.

When I was first married, I found a new chicken casserole recipe I wanted to try. It called for plain yogurt, but I had bought vanilla yogurt. I thought no big deal, that’ll work. Nope, it was so sweet and gross, but my understanding husband ate it anyway. 19 years later, he still teases me every time he sees plain yogurt in the fridge, or does the grocery shopping and has to buy it. Needless to say, I learned my lesson that day, and have not repeated that mistake since. ????

Fortunately, my kitchen mishaps have been minor. Mostly in the form of layer cakes breaking into several pieces and “glueing” them with frosting. I am also notorious for leaving the coffee pot on. One time I left a 1/2 gallon of organic milk out all night long…ouch to my pocketbook 🙁

My latest was to add double the amount of water to a cake I was making for my son for valentine’s day. It was a poke cake with a peanut butter filling so it turned out fine, just a little thin. I am usually the one who sets of the smoke alarm due to multi-tasking while cooking.

I was making chicken tortilla soup using a store bought roasted chicken. Half of the chicken went into the pot on the stove and the other half I put in a leftover container to use later. I turned around to do something at the sink and I heard a clang sound. When I turned back toward the stove, my German Shepherd had his face in the pot full of chicken (stove had yet to be turned on). He was very pleased with himself. Needless to say I had to throw out what remained in the pot. I’m glad I had the other half left, otherwise we would have had veggie tortilla soup.

One of my messiest mishaps was while using my blender to make fresh spaghetti sauce. After all the ingredients were mixed in the blender I lifted the glass pitcher off the base. The pitcher lifted easily but the blades and the casing that holds them remained attached to the base. There was spaghetti sauce all over the blender base, the counter, the floor… I now check the casing constantly when using my blender to be sure it is screwed on tightly. That was one mess I do not want repeated!!

I went to put cookies in the oven on a cookie sheet and the balls of dough rolled off the pan and into the bottom of the oven. Had to let the oven cool to clean up the mess and scrape burnt cookies out of it.

We were in the middle of a kitchen remodel. My husband/plumber (aka ManofWonder as well) had been installing the new valves under what was to be the new kitchen sink. He told me “watch for leaks and I’ll go downstairs and turn the main water valve on.” Well, he turned it on and we instantly had the Bellagio fountain in the middle of my kitchen — he had forgotten to install the cold water valve! I’m screaming — “turn it off, turn it off! We have a leak!”– all the while trying to stop the geyser like the little dutch boy. He runs upstairs to see what the commotion is about (without turning off the main valve) then has to run back downstairs and turn it off. I was not smiling when he returned to find me drenched and standing in the middle of quite a sizeable lake! So I feel your kitchen sink pain!

My first Thanksgiving dinner, having the new in laws over after our marriage in Oct…everything was going well until I served up a lovely pumpkin pie, had some trouble cutting the slices, turned out, I had left that plastic insert (that covers the pie shell when you buy it) in when I filled it:P then on another occasion, while making some fresh pea soup, got to the part where I blend it in parts, to make it creamy…all well and good, until I forgot to put the lid on the blender before I turned it on! Ugh..pea soup, not pretty on the walls!

Do you know those lovely little pouches of mac & cheese you can whip right up in the microwave??… Well, many moons ago (I was 18, I believe) I thought some mac & cheese sound pretty darn good. So I pop it in the microwave and a little while longer I smell something burning, run to the microwave to find a giant black blob of hard as rock noodles… apparently I’d decided to skip what water step 🙁 … as luck would have it I’ve turned into pretty darn good cook, but everytime I make something to take to a family gathering my lovely father says something along the lines of “Ash, this is pretty good which surprises me since you can burn macaroni” Funny man he is 😉

Oh man- there are plenty since our oven cooks unevenly & always takes way longer to properly cook anything. So when I checked my son’s birthday cake too soon the entire center collapsed. It was an utter & complete fail. My mom- who was a professional cake decorator – would have been laughing at me in my misery.

One year for Christmas I was making cake in a jar to give to my friends. The jars didn’t look very full so I increased the amount I put in on the second batch. It overflowed and set my oven on fire! After I put the flames out I decided that the directions knew better than I did. What a mess!

I was making soup for dinner and misread the recipe. I doubled the amount of pepper in it-but quickly realized my mistake and thought I could skim it off the top since I hadn’t stirred it in yet. I skimmed off what I could and thought I did a good job. You wouldn’t think plain old pepper would be real spicy, but it certainly had a kick to it! We sat down to eat and my poor 18 month old started wiping her tongue off with her fingers after the first bite. I was able to choke it down-we ended up making pb&j for the kids. I felt terrible about how spicy it was for them! I’m sure I’ve done worse things in the kitchen, but I just can’t think of anything else at the moment. I’m sure if you asked my husband this question about me he would come up with LOTS of stories-haha! 🙂

I made an apple pie for my in-law’s Christmas get-together (the first Christmas after we were married might I add). Anyways, I have these cooling racks that have legs you can pull out so the rack isn’t sitting directly on your counter and your food cools faster. Well I took my pie out of the oven and set it on my cooling rack, and about 30 seconds later my pie was on the floor! Apparently I hadn’t opened one of the legs fully and it collapsed, therefore, causing my beautiful pie to slide to the floor! 🙂 So much for apple pie!! 🙂

Our first year married I tried to make our first Valentine’s dinner special. I attempted to make a homemade from scratch cheesecake but didn’t have a spring form pan. I thought I could just use a glass cake pan. I’m still but sure what happened but my cheesecake exploded all over my oven. We ended up with grocery store cheesecake that year.

A few days ago I made meatloaf for dinner and forgot to put a pan underneath, resulting in grease spilling over onto the bottom of my oven. Halfway through (when the oven started smoking) I put a pan under and let the meatloaf finish. But by the time we were done eating and I decided to let my 3 yr old help me make cookies I had forgotten all about the spilled grease. (I’m 26 weeks with #3 and have a 2 yr boy and a 3 yr old girl. I tend to forget a lot of things these days) So we started on the cookies, dumped the whole thing because I messed it up (I’m also not a very good cook to begin with), started over, and put them in the oven. Ten minutes later the oven was on fire. I rushed my little girl out of the kitchen but didn’t really know what to do. Luckily my husband came home right then and dumped baking soda on the fire to put it out.

In a food service class in college, my assignment was to make cookies for a large quantity of students – converting tablespoons to grams, etc. I made a huge mistake in the conversion, and in my nervousness of preparing these in front of the cafeteria staff and my professor, I added WAY too much baking powder. Needless to say, my cookies were horrible! The cafeteria ladies politely tasted my cookies and smiled. I tasted them, and was horrified! Amazingly, producing a quality final product was only a portion of the grade, and I didn’t fail the project. Best of luck on your kitchen repair!

I had made my husband,Then boyfriend, a birthday cake. I wanted it to be a surprise so before he came over I “hid” it in the oven. It just so happened to be on a plastic serving tray. My room mate came home and wanted to cook a pizza….she started heating the over. Needless to say we ended up with ashy melted plastic, a ruined oven, non recognizable cake and empty fire extinguisher!

I had been newly divorced with 2 babies, 18 months apart. I had just moved into a crappy, run down apartment. Determined to make a better life for us, my first item of business, was to give the kitchen a makeover! With zero budget, I lined the outside cupboard doors with lining paper ha ha! I decided the place needed to smell good- so I poured a bag of potpourri down the kitchen sink and ran the water over it. Needless to say… The landlord spent the day digging potpourri out of the disposal! (I was young…) 😉
