Ninja Blender Giveaway, baby!

by Jamie

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED

Today, I really REALLY wanted to post a fabulous new recipe for you all. That was my plan all week-long, you see. But as luck would have it, my good intentions were rudely interrupted by fact that my kitchen sink simply decided to come unglued from her usual spot and fell right out from under the counter-top leaving me with no running water (or sink!) in my kitchen and 500 dirty dishes just begging to be cleaned.

This is not a joke.

Would I lie to you?

No way, man. I would not.

Good times around here, my friends. After I washed the previously mentioned 500 dishes (give or take 450) in my bathtub during the late night hours, I had a good nights rest and woke up ready and willing to serve my family cheap, five dollar pizza for the duration my small kitchen crisis. (Which should be over in the next 24 hours or so. At least that was the good news given to me today by MyHandsomeHusband aka Repair Man of Wonder).

And so, dear readers, instead of a new recipe for you today I am giving away one of my favorite kitchen appliances of all time.

Isn’t she a beauty!

I would love to give one of you lucky readers a brand spanking new Ninja Kitchen System 1200 (BL700), complete with a small and large pitcher and many different cutting blades (including a whipping blade and dough hook).

I absolutely adore this contraption. I use it for all kinds of things, including smoothie making, chopping nuts, veggies, blending up graham cracker crumbs for crusts, making salad dressings, whipping cream, blending dips..etc, etc, etc…I have even used it in a pinch to make cookie dough and bread dough! Amazing, it is.

I use mine every day.

Just like I used to use my kitchen sink every day.

Until she went rogue on me. Dang thing. Hoping once she has been restored to her full glory, we can be friends again. She and I spend a lot of time together after all. 🙂

To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave me a comment telling me one of your kitchen mishaps. (Goodness knows we all have them!) Did you accidentally pour freshly made gravy down the sink? Did you burn your husbands birthday cake? Did your chicken soup boil over while you were eating chocolate and reading a great book?

I would love to hear your stories. Everyone needs a good laugh now and then, right! You may enter from now until Thursday March 6th. Winner will be announced and contacted on Friday March 7th.

Good luck, everyone!

It was Christmas time and I was making homemade caramels. I had a bowl in the microwave and when I took it out part of my hand touched the hot bowl and I dropped it on my hardwood floor. Needless to say the mixture hardened before we got it cleaned up so we literally had to carefully scrape it off the floor with a blade to get it off!

My husband and I were preparing to have our family over for Easter lunch when the dish drain clogged up – I didn’t realize it was a no-no to put egg shells in the disposal! What a mess and an expensive one to get a plumber on Easter morning.

Put 2eggs on to boil for a Sunday breakfast, made a call to my elder sister did a few trips up and down stairs to my computer when I hear two bombs ran up stairs to find the pan had boiled dry and the eggs had exploded and I had eggs from the ceiling to the floor, two hours I had the mess cleaned up. LADIES never do that it makes a very large mess.

Don’t know what I was thinking when I used the crock of my slow cooker in the oven. The crock held up fine, the handle on the lid melted into a puddle on the lid. I still use it, but I have to use a butter knife to lift the plastic…too cheap to buy a new pot 😛 I thought the handle would be tempered for higher temperatures.

My husband and I had been married about 10 years and one of his birthdays was celebrated with friends and family including his parents who traveled from another state to help us celebrate. His mother and I had always gotten along so I decided it would be a great bonding experience to make his favorite cake together-a cake that his mother had made for him since he was a child-German Chocolate. It did turn out to be a great bonding moment but not for the reason you think. When we started to frost the cake (everyone was outside celebrating by the way) it began to crumble like nothing you’ve ever seen. At first we both speechless, then all of a sudden we both started giggling like pre-teenagers. We started to giggle even more as we “glued” the cake together with frosting and then hid it all under a great coating of frosting. Obviously we had to make extra. People kept trying to come in asking what all the laughing was about but we wouldn’t let them. The cake was a great success and a happy time we still occasionally reminisce about.

When I was 12 I decided to impress my family by trying to make lasagna. I had just made it in my Home Ec class and thought it would be impressive for my family. Everything was great until I pulled it out of the oven with my mom and older brother standing nearby. I might have been good in Home Ec but not good in Science. I hadn’t realized that the plastic pan cover was not meant to go in the oven, it was meant to keep it fresh in the refrigerator. The plastic was melted all over the top of the lasagna. The worse part was how my brother laughed at me and told me how stupid I was. Science lesson learned but still a little pain from my brother’s reaction. So much for impressing the family!

This one is a story on my little brother – one day when we were kids I left him “washing dishes” (really playing with the spray nozzle) when the faucet came off and water started shooting up to the ceiling. He was one scared little guy – I actually managed to fix the faucet and dry the curtains so Mom and Dad never knew!!!

Mine was I emptied my favorite pot and put it back on the stove forgetting to turn the burner off. It got so hot that it popped the bottom off of my pot, making it un-useable and unfixable. So upsetting.

We were pretending hamburger patties were pizza dough and tossing them in the air. One was tossed too high and stuck to the newly painted ceiling! We had to scrape it off with a broom.

We didn’t eat that one.

Right after installing our beautiful brand new oven I told my son to lay foil down on the top shelf rack and bake a totinos pizza on that. He lay foil on the bottom of the stove. The foil melted into the bottom of it, we have no idea how to get it off. Our pretty new stove isn’t so pretty when we open it and see that mess 🙁

The first time I ever made a turkey for Thanksgiving I left the bag of giblets and livers, etc in the turkey. Had no idea it was suppose to be taken out. My new in-laws were there and we all had a good laugh. My father-in-law was a gem and really made it seem OK that I messed up.

I have one of those wonderful Cuisinart ice cream makers with the bowl that you keep frozen in the freezer. I was making chocolate ice cream so I plugged in the mixer, turned it on and poured the cream into the mixer. Well, I guess I forgot to put the bowl in first so I had chocolate cream all over the counter. Duh!!!

I dropped a bin of cocoa powder under a large hood system in a commercial kitchen. The lid popped off and the entire room was enveloped in a blanket of chocolate powder. Took hours to clean it up.

My son wanted a milkshake, rather than just do it for him I told him I’ll tell you the steps & you can make it yourself. Gives me peace of mind knowing that he’ll be able to survive on his own when he moves out. Albeit, on meatball sandwiches & milkshakes, (only dishes he knows). He got out the blender put in a couple scoops of ice cream & added the milk. At this point milk slowly starts oozing across the counter & he has a look of horror on his face. I guess he was afraid he was in trouble. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t speak. I grabbed towels & cleaned up the mess & pulled the pitcher off & the bottom hadn’t been screwed on correctly. Once it was all fixed he made his milkshake & now he always double checks the bottom. Lol

I have catastrophes (minor ones, anyway)all the time, but one of them that irks me the most is a time when I was cooking a bunch of turkey legs for a bunch of teenage boys. They had been brining overnight, and in my infinte wisdom I had decided to brine them in those disposable foil pans instead of something slightly sturdier. I was carrying one of those horrid pans from the stove to the sink to dispose of the brine, and the pan collapses under the weight of the turkey legs and brine, sending turkey-juice-infused sticky, salty brine all over my stove, kitchen floor, and into the vents of my oven door. I have never been able to get the nasty streaks cleaned off the inside of my oven door, and I keep a towel hanging on the oven door now so I don’t have to see it. 🙁

My family took it easy on me after having my fourth child, so all I had to make for Christmas Dinner was the pistachio salad. I always strain the nuts out ~~ kids eat it that way…well this time I had my strainer over the sink and dumped all the pudding mix down the drain. All I was left with was the fragments of the pistachio nuts! Sadly…it has happened more than once. I’ve gotten better, but still by a few extra boxes of pudding mix 🙂

My kitchen mishap is an appliance snafu….although I’ve had my share of food mishaps over the years too! We had family over for dinner. My wonderful husband was cleaning off the dishes at the sink using the detachable spray nozzle of the faucet. While spraying the dishes, the nozzle came loose, fell off and shot water across the room hitting my brother-in-law square in the face. Needless to say, he wasn’t thrilled at the time but today we can laugh about it!

Making several varieties of goodies for a church function, my mom left me in charge of the last thing…..a double batch of made from scratch brownies. I was very diligent in following directions and put them in the oven. They smelled fantabulous! They looked perfect upon taking them out, but when we tried to cut them we realized they were hard as a rock. Left on the far side of the counter were the eggs…. I had to use a good chunk of allowance money to replace one of my mom’s favorite pans. Life lesson learned the hard way. I now I have the pan in my cupboard.

All these stories made my day. I have been reading and laughing for 20 mins! My mishap was really my dad’s – when I was younger. He really could not cook a dang thing other than to make popcorn (the old fashioned way). One day instead of using OIL he used CARO SYRUP!! OMG the pan was full of black stuck on popcorn. Pretty dang funny!

It is so comforting to know that we are not alone when it comes to “goofs” in the kitchen. I HAD a small favorite microwave pan. I was going to heat some water for tea and fillespd my pan. Went about other things and then noticed water all over my stove. I had put the microwave pan on top of the stove (on high) instead of in the microwave. Thank goodness it was only water and melted plastic. (Senior moment).

My latest blunder was while making pancakes. I made all but two pancakes before the family sat down to eat. I thought I was being clever, no jumping up and down to finish up the rest of the pancakes so I could eat with everyone else. Fifteen minutes later and a little bit of smoke reminded me that I should have done a little running. Those pancakes were burnt on the bottom and still a little raw on top. Oh well, at least I got to eat a whole meal sitting down.

I had the intentions of baking some awesome cookies for a dinner with my friends and family. I wanted them to be fresh, so I was going to put them in the oven as we were all still eating dinner. I set the oven, prepared my tray, and put them in the oven. A few minutes later, I must have forgotten I put them in there, so I made ANOTHER tray, and placed them on the oven rack. When I went to check on them, I had 2 trays, stuck together. The cookies I originally made were stuck to the bottom of my second tray, flat as a pancake. Even flatter!

My very first baking experience was baking a cake from a box mix for my grandparents when I was about 10 years old. I carefully measured the oil and water, added two eggs, and stirred until it was blended. I carefully put the pan in the oven and set the timer.Twenty minutes later I went to check on it and discovered I’d made a nice pan of very runny scrambled eggs. I swear to this day (I’m now 56!) that the box NEVER told me to add the cake mix!!!

When my oldest was a baby, he had stuck some plastic nesting cups into the oven where we were renting. I turned the oven on in order to make dinner and couldn’t figure out what the wretched smell was. Burnt plastic in the oven. Needless to say, we didn’t use the oven for quite a while until we got as much of that horrible plastic out as we could.

When we were first married, 25 years ago, I wanted to have Easter dinner for the entire family. Well, I baked the ham but never took the plastic wrapper off! My mom and I discovered it as we took it out of the oven and crowded around so no one could see and we peeled the plastic and the skin off the ham and we ate it anyway!!! I never did that again!

This isn’t my mishap, it’s the Big Man’s. He decided to cook a turkey dinner for himself one Thanksgiving while I was out of town. Big mistake. Somehow he managed to spill turkey juice on the bottom of the oven. This set off a chain of events that resulted in the fire department being called and him blaming the whole incident on a “hole” in my (one-piece, forged steel) roasting pan. He hasn’t attempted to cook since then. 😉

I have had many kitchen mishaps but one that sticks out is I made this recipe for slow cooked chicken in an electric skillet and cooked it low and slow for hours. The chicken ended up sticking to the pan on the bottom and burning. We all sat there and picked at it not wanting to eat it but noone wanted to say anything until I spoke up. 🙂

I was going to cook something and put the pot on the back burner and turned it on. I didn’t realize I had turned on the front burner instead. I was wearing a brand new baggy shirt. When I leaned over to switch the knobs at the back of the stove, my shirt rested on the exposed front burner. It left a nice burnt imprint on my new shirt.

When making s’mores, I like my marshmallows gooey and my chocolate almost melted. My husband made me one that wasn’t exactly right, so I went inside and put it into the microwave for a few seconds. Turns out that putting an already hot marshmallow in the microwave will set it on fire.
