The Weekend Report: My Favorite Christmas Tradition

by Jamie

If you had to choose your favorite thing about Christmas time, what would it be? There are many I enjoy.  Making delicious goodies, the glow of Christmas lights at night, reading Christmas stories to my kids, the wonderful music, and especially the plethora of kindness people show to each other. It’s a pretty fabulous month, if the truth were to be told.

But in my heart of hearts…I have a clear favorite. A tradition our family has had for my entire married life. On Christmas Eve we have a party with our Eskelson family (my husband’s side) and on Christmas day we party with our Willahan family (my side). We both come from big families so there are many, many cousins, nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters. Being together is fabulous.

At both parties, each individual family has to come prepared with a musical number to perform for the rest of the families. It doesn’t have to be anything super serious…

You don’t even need to know how to play an instrument! But if you do, it’s a welcome treat.

Some numbers are fun and spunky…

Some are full of vigor!

Most are a group effort…

…and many are super sweet. 🙂 Do you feel like kissing their cheeks. I do.

Some of the family musical numbers are sort of weird and hokey. Remember last year when everyone was watching that crazy video “What Does The Fox Say?” You know it, right!  In preparation for our family musical number we watched that wild video about 500 times and learned to sing it…and (hold on to your pajamas) dance to it. We DO NOT have the Moves Like Jagger, make no mistake.  Ours was a scary replica, to say the least, but good glory did we have a fun time working on it. I think we laughed at each other more than anything else, and you know how fun that can be. 🙂 Wing-ding-ding-ding-ding…

I have to admit, some years in the past when December has gotten crazy busy, I may have been the tiniest bit grumpy about taking extra time out  to work on our family musical number. Just one more thing to add to the list, right? However, looking back through the years, the time we have spent together on these numbers stands out as a precious highlight. It has definitely turned into my favorite Christmas tradition, hands down. Love working on it, love performing it and I especially love seeing all of my sibling and nieces and nephews perform their numbers.

This cute boy  here, is my oldest.  Next Christmas he will be far from home serving as a missionary for our church. Our family musical number will bump from 7 members down to 6. That is a fact I can scarcely believe.

Hoping to soak up every minute I have with him and the rest of my crew.

Happy Holidays, everyone! Hope you are enjoying it with those you love.

Jamie, If you are Christian, why are you so reluctant to say Merry Christmas?
