August Menu Plan 2013

by Jamie

Can you believe the calendar has gone right ahead and melted itself into August. How does time fly by so quickly! Do you know? I sure don’t. I’m glad there are a few more weeks of summer left to enjoy. Here in sunny Herriman, where I live, we have year round school. Which means the elementary aged kids have a tracking system and are out of school for a time in the middle of the winter, and have to go to school during some of the summer. This year, as luck would have it, we had were on the track that lets out early and were put on a track that starts late for the upcoming school year. What does that mean to me? 12 fabulous weeks of summer…that’s what. No school, no homework, no nothin’.  This is the first summer we’ve ever had like this in all of the time I have been raising children. Ah, you feel happy for me don’t you. That’s really nice of you.

If I were a perfect Mom, like the kind that win Mother of The Year and everything, I would happily report that every morning I assign my kids to do some school work, practice the piano, read a some inspirational literature followed by a vivacious 2 mile jog around our neighborhood. Sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it? Nothing wrong with a plan of attack.

I tried to do that last year, and found myself in a stressed out frenzy more often than not, trying to bark out orders and keep my kids following a perfectly plotted agenda.

This year I opted to try a more laid back approach and have tried to just soak up the time we have being together. I hope my kids remember how to read when they have to go back to school. Don’t report me to the authorities, ok? I’m sure at least half of them still know the difference between the letter B and D. At least my boy in high school.

We’ve spent more days at Bear Lake than we have at home, and man it has been a bit of heaven on earth. Some of you may have noticed a lot of my instructional photos have looked different than usual. It’s still me taking the pictures…just in a different kitchen. You don’t mind, do you? I’m still getting used to the lighting in this kitchen, thanks for your patience.

At Bear Lake we’ve done a lot of really important things like…

Single Hummingbird at Bear Lake

watching  this cute hummingbird drink from our feeder.

Birds at Bear Lake

Must have been a pretty sweet drink because he invited some friends. At one point we counted 14 hummingbirds fighting for a taste. Very entertaining, and I’m not kidding. My kids loved it. Crossing my fingers we don’t get infested. 🙂 Wouldn’t want my eye poked out or anything.

Mark

We also spent some time finishing a bathroom in the basement of our place at Bear Lake.

Anna

Ok, mostly MyHandsomeHusband and MyTeenSonMark built it (good father-son bonding time). But the rest of us helped put the floor in. The handsome man mentioned previously got a bright idea to put in a Sand and Seashell floor.

Edited Floor

He covered it all with Self Leveling Epoxy…Looks kind of cool, don’t you think?

Floor

Hoping no one slips and breaks their neck! Or gets pecked in the eye by a hummingbird. These are the very serious concerns of my life. Truly.

Anyhow, we have been having a great summer. Planning on soaking up a few more weeks of it. Oh, and spending some time reminding kids that they know how to read. 🙂

I am so happy that you all have been able to enjoy the summer together.
Also, I love the floor. Is it slippery when wet?

Hi Jenn,
It’s not as slippery as you might think. A little bit more than tile, but not much.

Gorgeous pictures! My grandparents had a cabin in Oakley when we were kids and we’d stand there for ages with our fingers held up in front of the feeder for the humming birds to perch on. They got so used to us they’d just zoom right up and sit down with no hesitation. Dang, that’s a great summer you’ve been having. Well done!

Love that floor! If we ever win the lottery, I’m getting a lake-side cabin! We are in Colorado, and I could do the mountain thing, but the beach is where I’m at.

We have a hummingbird nest, but no feeder. We’ve been trying to figure out why our yard was so attractive and we’ve decided our hummingbirds wanted low-traffic. LOL.

Thanks for the awesome recipe inspiration!

I would also be interested in how to do that floor. We’re currently building a house, and want to do something like that for our bathroom.

I love the flooring. Did they just cover the old flooring with sand and seashells, then pour epoxy? I would love to know for my daughters room.
